Tom,
The funny thing was I was really angry with myself for getting one wrong! Still it was at least 12 years ago when I probably had lots of young mans ego invested in the outcome...
Now I simply couldn't be bothered.
Rob.

Hi Rob,
Kinda funny how priorities over time change. I'm now in my fifties, and all I want is a good sounding system. No matter if I have to build it myself, or buy it from a commercial vendor. I don't have the money to be chasing for that last bit of detail. I am looking at building my own amp, just so I can say I actually did it and can be proud of it. I have heard both Bedini and Atcom amps. At one point, I lived with a guy who used to sell audio out of his house. John Bedini would come over quite often with a new amp. The last one I heard before I moved was an amp he says was built out of all but diodes. No transistors. Don't know if he was pulling my leg or not, but I came away with one rememberance. The bass was exstremely tight and detailed. Now, maybe a day or so later, I might have been able to tell you about that amp's sound, but over time, that's the only thing I remember. John told me I would not forget it either. Anyway, enough of this stuff, looking forward to hearing what Chris says next.
Regards,
Ray

So I think I've worked out a semi reasonable way of squeezing in a set of T-network caps to my liking.
It seems it will take a little while though, think I'll put a few tools on my list of "must get soon".
Spent all night making up some aluminum brackets, using the truest pauper diy method. How'd I cut it you ask? Eaaaaasy say's I, a little scorring with a carpenters knife, a little carefull bending and snapping, some twisting 'n ripping with two pairs of diagonal wire cutters, and a whooooole lot of filing. Wheeww.
Nicest bracket ever I tell you! One more to go..
Should have gone for the tape and glue method but I thought I'd impress you guys 🙂

It's one thing to say our ear/brain is a marvelous system capable of discerning nuances we cannot measure; I'll accept that possibility.
I'm not buying it. Dogs can, people can't. 😀
Some people might teach themselves to be critical of some differences like minor EQ or phase differences. And I've read about people that see colors from sounds, or taste sound which could make them more sensitive.

This isn't the norm, and it can't be taught.
A blind test would be good, but it's a lost cause for now. And you'd a cross sampling to get a norm.
Luckily Lars is very honest with his specs and measurements. Tests conducted in the past, using blind and other measure, can be compared with Lars specs to show expectations.
Looks like a great amp, right out of the box!

A blind test between what? NCD & Hypex? Or vanilla NCD & what results after Chris has done his pick & mix of components?
In what way does it 'look like a great amp'? On what do you base your enthusiasm?

lol
Maybe is time to measure it?

Based on posted measurements. And on hearing tests done on other amps with posted specs. When specs go a certain way the indicated better or worst sound in some way.
Blindtests was, I think invented to try and prove that it wasnt possible to hear all theese small differences
I think we are beond that, as nobody will deny to hear the difference between cables and such, or perhaps mor accurately, what it does to the active system
If we can hear differences that cant be measured?
In principle I guess we cannot.
BUT, I am sure we can hear and detect some relations between various sound fenomena, but we cant excactly explain why we prefer one or the other
And we are very sensible to changes
You can measure theese things individually, but it will take a very skilled ingeneer to analyze, and explain the relations
In the end he will most likely be guessing, but we hear and feel theese differences, none the less

Unanimous we fall😉 Divided we stand?
Perhapes we know each other´s arguments too well?
How about a blind test , were you have to identify Lars new amp, whithout ever hearing it before?
Or a blind test of transformers(from different countries)?
Or blind testing blind testing.
Or blind testing my brain

When the amps. arrive I will test them against the UCD's and Coldamp. Just curious to see if they're any different. I will do a direct switching comparison with different speakers and people.
Will be fun to do.

Will be fun to do.

Hi,
I can't speak for Lars, as he seems to be MIA, consequently tests for post filter feedback mode are being delayed.
As for myself I tried to get some pictures uploaded off of an old Sony Mavica camera and plugging my floppy drive back in to get them seems to have killed it. I still plan on getting some here somehow, but it looks like those first few may not get off the slate.
At the same time I near the final phase of upgrading the PSU and may just end up with an "after" type shot, the before's are over on the NCD website anyway.
It will also be no problem at all for me to upgrade the inputs to fully balanced shortly after getting the supply back together.
Once all the above is completed I'll be more willing to comment as to how it differs from a UCD amp. While working on the NCD supply I've been listening to the ucd again which is also featuring a freshly rewired psu. The shear holographic imagery, with ultra clean power, work towards great depth and soundstage width, but in stock form can still also be improved in some very simple ways. I'll also be getting some parts towards that soon as well.
In the meantime I look forward to possibly trying the NCD with new supply today sometime.
Cheers,
Chris

Did you ever do the UcD - Coldamp comparison?

I know you've already heard them, but no details about how good it is yet, so someone out there still might have a chance.😉

Ofcourse as I have them both. I use them both also. And this is my opinion: so far, the coldamp adds more body to the sound. UCD's(180&400) sound a bit thinner. They are both very nice. But the big test I will do somewhere in okt/nov. when the NCD amp. is finished.

As I remember, last time I asked you were going to present a comparison when you were satisfied with your smps setup - mind you, my memory isn't what it was.
Your opinion seems similar to mine - Coldamp is warmer, UcD more clinical.
I also found very little difference between UcD180 & 400.
My speakers are a little idiosyncratic (Lowther EX3's with silver voice coils in Icon rear-horn cabinets), so I am wary of pronouncing definitive judgements on relative performance.

Keith
