Maiko 1

The Maiko uses a 5Dnf.
The driver is about 5 inches
How deep?
I do not know, I have not measured it.
My guess is it rolls off around 60 cycles or so.
I use subs a pair. 12 inch with a modded plate amp.
They come in gently around 80hz and come on strong at 60 or so.
Some times I unplug the subs and listen with just the 5Dnf. To me, I'm happy with the sound either way. The sound is easy on the ears and very natural.

At RMAF 08, i was not able to go into many rooms because of the sonic assault. To much tizzieness, slam and slap. I'm to old for my ears and they like systems that are kind and rather considerate. Many of the rooms made me feel like I was walking into war. No thanks guys, not my cup of tea.

Awesome Scott and Dave - Thanks!!!

Phil, I too am using Maiko 1 in a small room, 12 x 11 x 9 with no sub and lots of acoustic treatment. 100W tube amps. It is a great match, the small room supports the bass well and is very satisfying, even on bass heavy smooth jazz, etc. A big green lazyboy helps too.

Looking forward to warmer weather and sawdust season!
Happy Thanksgiving to the American diy'ers.

For you guys its turkey...

For me tofu...

You have simply not lived if you have never tasted tofurkey...

Hey, don't knock tofu . . . there is nothing wrong with tofu that can't be cured by using it in spicy Korean cooking:

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

This Thanksgiving I'm giving thanks for Asia . . . this turkey went looking for Pilgrims and Indians, and wound up on the banks of the Ganges River. :clown:

You might be in for a slight surprise when you see them...

A simplified visualization... none of the internal bracing is shown.

A bit more tidying and the plans will be sent to the distribution list.

As I've mentioned before, as far as I'm concerned, the first box was unfortunately crippled almost from inception from a technical POV. That said, it shouldn't sound 'muffled' so much as devoid of control, so if it sounded muffled, something was clearly wrong elsewhere, unless by that you mean that it was ringing in the time domain which would certainly rob it of definition.

Either way, basic scientific principles went to the wall with that one; this box is how I wanted it to be in the first place from a technical POV. Vb is 30% greater Vb than Freddie, so there's a little more extension, but it's not so large as to loose control. The chamber internals are much simpler & more efficient too (simplicity rules). Expect it to sound somewhat like a larger Freddie cabinet with a bit more on the low end & enhanced image height / depth. Distortion is also lower due to the horn profile -you've probably noticed the enclosure has a trapeziod crossection. If you're interested, it's tuned to 61Hz. FWIW, purely from a theoretical POV, my preference for the Feastrex units would be an amplifier with a reasonable DF; they're not a particularly easy load (short of stuffing them in a 'proper' max-flat impedance TL), so something that can keep a decent grip on them wouldn't be a bad idea. YMMV as ever of course.
