Recognize that sound.I know this speaker. A friend of mine build a pair with some Fostex fe103 he had left over. It’s a nice speaker within it’s limitations. It is not highend, therefore it seriously lacks bass, scale, dynamics and resolution (like any other speaker with such tiny drivers does) but it is nicely balanced between bass roll-off and treble roll-off. It does have an elevated presence around 3-4khz which makes up for the lack of top end and gives you an illusion of microdynamics which so many people seem to like about these tiny fullrange drivers. It becomes critical about recording quality because of this however, but that’s not the recordings fault, its the speaker. Use it nearfield it is an enjoyable speaker you can listen to for hours but don’t expect it to be highend
Alpair is more extended frequency curve and addictive.
Balance is the key.
A little closer to high-end and without phase shifts.
No filter to spoil the experience.
I see it with.. Frequencies around 2500-3500 hz are our ears particularly sensitive to. When I choose drivers, I would like them to have a lower level than the other frequencies. - 1.5db minimum.Has anyone heard all the various FE103 itterations? Looking at FR plots from the internets, they seem to handle top mids and highs quite differently.
All drivers have a different frequency curve. It is important to choose carefully.
I have no experience with the Fe 103. But you can see in the frequency curve that they do not have the lowest and highest frequencies. A large baffle can affect the frequency response in the lower frequency.

I think the idea was to make it as much a true fullrange as possible - wide baffle to support the lower midrange, the big volume and port being tuned low, leaving a dip in the midrange in favour of low extension.close to golden ratios on that box ( 1 : 1.618 )

The more I think about this design, the more I think is genious. That is considering its real-life aplication (budget friendly, small to mid size spaces, likely to be against the wall..).
A typical european (bed)room is 3x4m, which usually means having speaker against a wall and sitting with your back to the facing wall. At that distance you are sitting in a high pressure midbass room mode, 3-4m -> 100-150hz, which is complimentary to the midbass dip of this design.
Present resurgence of interest in this design seems quite on point actually. For a few hundred bucks, you get a chance to experience something completely different to the motherload of decent bookshelf speakers, which really have the tuning done opposite to how they are usually used in real life and even recomended by the sellers.
I very well remember years ago reading a hype review in stereophile of the Wharfedale 225, by John Atkinson no less. I jumped right in. That thing would indeed play quite well if given a propper audiophile treatment, drawn far into the room of decent size and positioned carefully, minding reflections and so forth. Without fussing it was muddled and closed in. Showing it anywere close to a wall would boost the bass beyond tolerable.
FE103 are made in China.unless it’s some Chinese knockoff.
There have been many “FE103", both by Foster and by their competitors since they first apperaed in the early 60s(?). The best not made by Foster but by Coral and even rarer the Atomic. Modern ones will not have aged/ Some are good, some less so. Best ones i have heard ar ethe limited edition FE103 SOL.

OK new b here. Hi. So I had a double-shot of the Koolaid. I have a few tools and I've been wanting to build a speaker setup for ages, but not some simple basic box kit. The le Petit looks like a great jumping in point. Something clean and pure. I am going to build them over the holidays. I've chosen the slightly upgraded Fostex FF125WK that Janos on Real World Audio youtube recommended along with the slightly enlarged cabinet. I'll post as it comes along.
You want to build an enclosure for the FF125wk, not some semi-random box from the past because you like the looks,
IMO, the FF125wk is the weak spot in the FFxx5wk lineup, there are some tweaks needed to clean it up as well as a lot of break-in.

Hey Earl, give it a go and report back, I'm very curious how it goes with the slightly bigger driver. Supposedly the ff125wk has the same parameters, so it ahould work with this box. dave, if you search yt for Real World Audio and LePetit you will find a series of vids discussing suitable drivers for the lepetit (and this particular design in general).
Earl, i assume you have seen the recent build by another person behind the chanell "I am mad" and "Iam Mad" (2 chanells 1 is german and has more content on Lepetit.) He used the exact Hiraga dimensions, mdf and fe103nv. He seems very pleased (after a looooong break in). If my german was sufficient, in a most recent video he explains that he gave them a listen together with a person behind "Snake Oil Audio", who is quite an experienced person and also opined that they are great.

I'd also like to add that after spending a year listening to a FR and recently giving my SA ls3/5a a listen again (which i previously quite enjoyed) - well I'm seeing less and less breadcrumbs on the forest floor that would lead me back to the standard

Hi Thanks bridger, yes I've been checking all those videos out. A lot of them feel like they are referring back to some documents or info that is never fully illustrated, but I guess there's enough to get it built. ...ff125wk has the same parameters…
To which driver are the parameters the same?

I did. No way am i searching thru hours of video to find one small piece of info.
If the above is the box you propose, it will work pretty much as an infinite baffle, it is WAY to big for a reflex — the optimal miniOnken for the FF125wk is 9 litres, this box is 161 litres. And as drawn woefully underbraced.

A bit off topic, but...I've had a pair of refreshed Hans Deutsch ATL 312 S speakers (from the 80s)for a long time. They're designed by the Bozendorfer piano engineer. They have a really interesting design that seems to be alive. The transmission line port opens out a the front top and the tweeter is on a bridge across the middle of the port. The first time I fired them up Al Green materialised.Hi Thanks bridger, yes I've been checking all those videos out. HI, yes I was referring to Janos' video where he summed up all the drivers that might be feasible for the le petit build he talks about that driver having a longer excursion and a half-inch wider cone. A lot of info leading up to the 20 minute mark. He says something to the effect that it would be his choice for a new build. He mentions a slight enlargement of the cabinet that could improve bass response and give some dimensions as well-but that might be in a different video. They're all starting to run together - lol.To which driver are the parameters the same?

Cool. I found my first pair on the street one rainy night here in Essen Germany. A bit rough. I found a guy named Horst Wenzler in Bonn at Acoustiperfekt who hooked me up with a pair he rebuilt.
The woofers were swapped out to monacor. I'll take a look at the mids and get back later. Night.

Th Grand list of drivers for LePetit!!! - Part 1
Janos discusses pro and cons of various drivers. He talks about the Fostex FF125WK at 12:40 saying it would be his current choice of drivers. I found them on boomaudio in germany for 92,50 Euros each. The are a half inch larger diameter than the original Fostex, not sure about the mounting hole size. Probably the wood will cost more than the components! LePetit and LaGorda with FF125
He recalculated the box size to improve bass response but says there will be some small tradeoffs. At 9 minutes he shows the proposed internal dimensions.- Home
