hey guys!.. i was looking for something & bumped into your thread.

i know it's pretty late.. but if u want any info on YP speakers, i might be able to help.

although i don't work with them now, i am sure i could dig up some T/S parameters for u from my backup files.

I designed the 8" double magnet sub at YP a few years ago, originally, i put it together for an active sub in a 5.1 HT, later, they started retailling the driver. when we got a good response, we added a 6" also.

basically, they are really just "jugad" products.. not the ones that excite me.!

chers!

Hi Sanjay,

I had built a sealed sub using the YP (even though its QTS is > .7). I designed the box to have Q of around 1. I was planning to give it an active equalization but when i plugged the sub without the active equalization, the first thing i noticed was that the driver is getting saturated at low frequencies (below 50 hz), I am disappointed with the YP. Now i have a sub with 8" bolton which is performing much better than the other (even though it is a prototype box). Check this post for pics (warning the box is not well made and audiophiles may not like my woodworking skills:clown: ).

Hi Venki!

I used a 4-layer voice coil in that driver for a lower Q & so that i could use a smaller box. It's T/S (I have the CLIO System) are:
Fs = 38.33 Hz
Qms = 3.88
Vas = 21.8 liters
Cms = 0.34 mm/N
Mms = 50.5 g
Rms = 3.148 kg/s
P-Dia = 165 mm
Sd = 212.5 sq.cm
Qes = 0.57
Re = 2.8 ohms
Le = 0.86 mH
Z = 3.36 ohms
BL = 7.75 Tm
Qts = 0.49
no = 0.208 %
1-W SPL = 85.37 dB
2.83-V SPL = 89.93 dB

The box I designed for it was a simple Bass-Reflex with a down-firing Woofer, & front Firing Port. Box Details:
Type: Vented Box
Shape: Prism, square
Vb = 26.87 liters
Fb = 36.24 Hz
QL = 7
F3 = 33.71 Hz
Fill = none
No. of Vents = 1
Vent shape = round
Vent ends = one flush
Dv = 47 mm
Lv = 111.5 mm

So, it goes down to a good 33.7Hz, & with a 50W input, the excursion in the above design was 3mm at 33Hz. Driver X-max is about 4mm, so i was well within limit. Since the whole thing was active, i used a 24dB/Octave Active HP Filter & killed all frequencies below 30Hz.
The whole thing worked out ok..

In your design, i think the problem was that the box is too big.. i just simulated the same driver in a 50liter sealed box. with 50w, the cone displaces about 7mm at 30Hz.

The bolton is probably sounding better because it has a much weaker motor (higher Qs), needing a much bigger box.
Don't pump too much power into the bolton though.. they are still using paper coils & cheap foam surrounds.

happy listening!
