Need help for SE 300B 5K output transformers

Hi,

This is my first build into the tube world and I'm currently shopping for outputs. I'm building Tom's DG300B SE amplifier and it requires 5K primary and I'd like to get 4 and 8 ohms taps. Tom suggest 15W+ outputs in the manual so that's what I'm aiming for.

Here's what I found so far and I'd appreciate all the feedback about the models/brands if you're experienced with them and I welcome any suggestions as I'm new to tube amp building.

So here's the list I've eyeing

Monolith Magnetics S-11
Hashimoto H-20-7U
SILK (SEC) S-525F
James tranformers JS-6123H (but way overprice on ePay) Unobtanium...

Thanks for your help
You can also check with Kolarkar Audio research from India. Local DIYers have replaced Edcor , Hashimoto and other brands with his builds and have noted substantial improvement.

Regards,

I’d see if Jack Elliano still has laminations to wind it. Keep the conversation short.

I have the James and Hashimoto’s, both are good but but very similar in a DRD or Tubulab SE. Bass isn’t lacking in either. Overall I prefer the James. Try ISO as well. Easy to work with and their matching power transformers are reasonably priced, quiet.

Here my simplified Damn Good DG300B schematic that I simulated with the LTspice.

Consider Antek if Monoliths are out of your price range. Screenshots forthcoming, but I'm getting an awful lot of bandwidth and low distortion. Drops like a stone at 35khz. Maybe folks will explain how that's bad, but the graph goes quite a bit farther on both ends than the smaller Edcors.

James had a mixed reputation when they were new at $150. I've seen them for about what Monolith is asking lately. I dunno. But I've never had a pair.

O-Netics had a wide range, if I remember. If the price lines up with the size/specs, they'd be a neat thing to try. As would anything you can get Electraprint to make. The chatter about Silk has always been positive and the prices appear good. I'm not sure why we don't see them more frequently.

If Monoliths are an option, I recommend that. You'll see very serious folks offering nice concise recommendations. You don't see bad reviews or measurements. Or at least, I haven't.

There is no such thing as a large output transformer winding operation, though some of these folks do it alongside ancillary and more commercially viable businesses. Many of these things take time to find and get--even sometimes Hammond that shows as in stock. If you are itching to build, Anteks and others can be on your doorstep in a few days to tide you over.

I've contacted quite a few of the recommended brands and got answers from most of them. Now is just a matter of taking a decision...

- Monolith I see that the S-11 is 11 Watts rated so maybe I should aim for the S-25 instead just for headroom? What are your thoughts? And what about their SA version, is it worth the extra 60 Euros each?

- Hashimoto is interesting as well

- Kolarkar, he responded promptly but I'm still waiting for the price.

- Musecoil responded that the production is stopped until May/June which is a little too far for me

- o-Netics I've been offered a brand new pair at the same price the person paid (760$), so I guess these are level 2 OP ? Price seems more than fair.

- Antek, I'm not a fan and I don't know if their OP would sound great, can't judge because I've never heard them either.

- Toroidy makes amazing power transformers and I've bought many of them through the years, I just don't know about their OP, unless someone has experienced them and could tell me a little about them?

- J&K, I still need to contact them.

- James, forget about them... Only used and way too expensive. I'm actually a little afraid of buying used OP since I don't know if they were ever shorted...

There's more to add to this list later on.

Thanks for all the help and feedback from all!

I've just finished a build of the DG300b that I started almost 10 years ago. I used the Edcor CXSE25-5Ks and have been mostly happy with them, but they are really, really big. The reason for the 10 year build time was that I was trying to figure out how to build a chassis that would look good in our space given the size and weight of the power and output transformers. I've built other amps with the smaller Edcor transformers. If I were doing the DG300b again I would probably use the Edcor GXSE line just for the size savings.

I have very good experience with the single and toroid, I have used three different pairs, the 3.2 K for EL34, the 5K….

They sound great, they measure well, and they have done something right with the recipe. For the money, I think they are one of the best values out there.
