I have a variac with amp-meter. I only burned the circuit once.
I would use a bulb rather than a variac. Variacs have huge current delivery throughout the range. The bulb just limits cleanly.
I have used both a Variac and a Mains Bulb Tester.
The Variac is great for feeding in a non standard voltage. It provides no protection.
The Mains Bulb Tester is great at protecting. But it starts with a high source impedance and that gets higher if too much current is drawn. One needs to select the bulb wattage to suit the unknown load. Start low and check voltages. Work up to larger wattage AFTER you know that there is no mistakes in the wiring/assembly.

It's working.
I don't know what caused the failure. It must have been some bad solder joints.
Thank you for helping me!
I will build a bulb tester soon...
