Near-Field Speakers....

Hi all,

Well since i spend a lot of my time infront of this PC, ive decided im going to try and build some decent PC speakers.

I have a decent soundcard, DAC, gainclone amp, i just need speakers to match.

Ive done a bit of basic speaker box design, etc.... but i have no idea what is required for near-field listening.

By near-field i mean ~700mm from my ears to the speakers, which are about 800mm apart.

I have limited desk space, so ill have to go with 6.5" drivers or smaller... depth is a problem (max 300mm), but i can go as high as i like.

I would like to go with either Vifa or Peerless drivers, as they are in my price range, and easy to get here.

So.... any sugestions of possible drivers, etc that would work well with the above limitations?

Hey MWP,

what do you think of the combination of a PLW18WO-09-08 by Vifa and a DT 100H shielded tweeter by Peerless?

The PLW18 can play reasonably well in a small box. Using a 16.1 L bass-reflex box with a res. of 5cm diameter, and 17.3cm long, you'll have a -3 dB freq. of 46 Hz. The impulse response is pretty OK, silent in 8.5ms.
And I think 16.1 liters is small enough for you?

If this sounds good to you, maybe I can create a better design (this was just about a few minutes)

I've had good results with a vented MTM setup with the jaycar response shielded 5 1/4'' and vifa d19 tweeters, pretty smooth response down to 50hz (doesn't shake the room of course, but you can hear it) Used 12db x-overs at around 4k with a zobel network on the mids.

Ive takes a few photos of my PC setup to show the kinda room i have to play with:

The speakers i have there are the Jaycar 5" response (same as yours Volenti) with Philips (cant remeber the model) tweeters.

They are quite good, but dont have the bottom end response i would like.... there is a big gap between them and the 12" Jaycar Response sub (75L box under the desk).

The M18WO-09-08 looks nice... itll be touch and go if i can fit it on the desk, ill have to make up a mock box.

The tweeter also looks nice... but i am willing to spend a little more than that on a tweeter if there is one that will do the job better.

Im trying to decide...
Would having two woofers and one tweeter be better in this situation than one large woofer + tweeter?

Im thinking that woofer-tweeter-woofer would help stop the separation between the high and low sound sources.

Does that make any sense at all?

I've used both setups with the pc and can't say I really favour one over the other, though they wern't using the same drivers so it's a little difficult to compare critically.

I have always wondered about this... what is the system was ported, and you did like:

I am concerned about this because of my very close listening position.
With my current speakers, sometimes it does annoy me that the low+mids & highs are separated slightly.

Going MTM would help fix this but, im wondering if going for two smaller woofers over one larger HQ woofer (with lower FS) is a good idea....

BTW, SkinnyBoy... where do you get your drivers from?

You might look into co-ax speakers.

I think usually the reason people put the tweeters at the top is because it is the best place to ensure that the tweeters end up at ear level, which important for imaging. In an MTM config the tweeter should still be at ear level, but the tweeter being between the mids tends to limit high freq reflections off the floor and ceiling, chanelling the high freq straight at the listener.
