the pre-amp requires a plus and minus supply , i cant see any evidence of a transformer centre tap connection either .
Right! In two pictures only the + and - terminals for the power supply seem to be connected. Nothing goes to the GND connection ! Unless it is soldered underneath the board.

I have been busy with other things lately and haven't had time to play.
I got another transformer for this board and I have a somewhat sneaking suspicion that some of the noise was due to unrelated issues (I noticed a lot of noise in something else I was testing and realized my crummy soldering iron was plugged into the same crummy powerbar)
I'll pull out the board again sometime this week and get more information!

Yes, I am going to investigate further at some point this week. I apologize for going dark on this thread - other things got in the way.
