These things are getting there, did all finish Sanding last night, 120-220-320-420, smooth as a babies Derry-aire

For finish I'm thinking Minwax Natural and Spar varnish, same treatment as the Strafi. I also need to add the binding post provision in the back panel.

Thanks!

Coming together

Recessed the binding posts, this is something I've been doing on most of my builds

And always the best part, seeing that grain pop!

Once I'm done tuning them I'll do a spray on clear.

Thanks!

Looking very nice! Have you any ideas yet how low you'll cross them? I don't know what you use for crossover design, but I recommend VituixCAD. You can import your own measurements in there and design a crossover according to those.

You bet been working on them, using Xsim and Omnimic, xo around 300hz with a component to tame the top end of the PS95.

See here for a quick mid tune demo, sounds quite accurate with some good headphones

Ok done with the finishing process and I'm quite happy with the gloss finish, the grain in Mahogany is very deep and distinct and it's showing through as well, I didn't use any grain filler.

I'm still finalizing the XO, waiting for some components to show up, and I should have them buttoned up by the end of the week.

Here is the PR with no weight, about 64hz, causes a large boost in bass response

6a38a3006c45973d39638e1a2689cf42.jpg

After adding 30g of lead, I have some 40g coming too which I'll experiment with, 46.5hz

2a58d3faa1941bb45c9601d482d52795.jpg

And the difference in response nearfield, approx 5db drop between 65-95hz

I'm shooting for flat to 40hz and some more weight should get it to the low 40's fs

Little more assembly detail

For some strange reason TangBand put screw provisions for #6 on these meaty little subs, just not enough holding power, so I drilled out the frames to allow a #10 screw

In case you were curious, here is how the woofer goes into the enclosure

I've found Loctite construction adhesive works really well for sealing holes and wires like this, it bonds really well to plastic unlike silicone sealant

Binding posts installed, I'll also be mounting XO components to the back cover

3M Rubber feet installed. One thing to note, the dual opposed passive radiators are very stable, this speaker doesn't move even at full excursion, with one PR however it would walk badly. In my experience, dual opposed PR are a must in small speakers like this.

Been a while for an update! Been busy and had a business trip, but back to work and these are almost done.

Little stuffing in the lower chamber to help with higher freq reflections

XO components are attached directly to the removable back, I stapled T45 zip ties down which worked well.

Alight these babies are a wrap!

They sound similar to V1 but a few marked improvements:

1- larger volume allows deeper extension and smoother response w/o as much of a peak in response

2- these passive radiators are superior, they have absolutely no excursion issues (compared to the Peerless 5") and have no trouble taking 30g of weight to drop the resonant frequency to lower than V1. They can max out an Adcom GFA-545, it starts clipping and these are nowhere near finished, they easily hit 95db at 1 meter in room down to 50hz. They're not efficient, probably about 78db 1 watt on a good day but they can easily take the output of a 200 watt amp.

3- I ended up with a totally different crossover in this version, in V1 I ran the PS95 down to about 250hz, I went with something more along the lines of 900hz with V2. I also left the top end of the PS95 untouched which leaves the rise in FR above 6k. Overall they sound more detailed and lively and w/o any sssibilance, the V1 I would listen to on axis, V2 can be run with no toe-in and they have great off axis response too. High pass on the woofer is 18db and on the mid is 12.

(Thanks to Jeff Bagby for taking a look at my sim and making a suggestion)

The dip at 1k is in the PS95 in box response

130cc53f4ccfe113a8171e4671f349c6.jpg

4- V2 are bigger but still don't have a lot more physical presence, they're still tiny speakers and their bass performance totally belies their size, you really don't need a subwoofer with these.

They image very well, the coherence of the PS95-8 is excellent. They'll never have the warm and present sound of a good tweeter/mid combo but they sound really good for what they are. I'm definitely not a full range guy but the PS95 is a really nice sounding little driver.

I did a little better job finishing these, every seam is flush and perfectly flat, there aren't many flaws in this build, and I love working with this wood. The gloss finish is nice too.
