My_Ref Fremen Edition - Build thread and tutorial

I dont know but i feel i have to turn the volume up about half way to get a decent volume, i have ported 3 way speaker box with 12 inch woofer cone midrange and ribbon tweeter, i have built a few of these amps based on this chip and never noticed them being underpowered anyone have any sugestions also i am using a 300va toroid to power them at 25v

Sound wise is ok but not remarkable i have a valve amplifier based on the Dynaco ST-70 which sounds way better than my_refs, or could there be something wrong with them with all the rave about comments i am a bit dissapointed anyhow thanks i enjoyed building them.

there is nothing wrong with having to turn a volume control to more than 50% of it's rotation.
If you habitually only had to turn up your volume control by 10% of rotation, then that would be a waste and I would refer you to the Forum Article:
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/diyaudio-com-articles/186018-what-gain-structure.html
to help you find why and where the excess gain is. Then get it sorted.
Much of the commercial "separates" sold as hifi had excessive gain.

I would be glad to help you obtain full satisfaction from your 6th GB boards, I need some info more, though.

What is the sensitivity of your speakers?

Which BOM did you followed?

Which aspects of the FE presentation you feel are needing improvements?

Can you post a pic of your build?

Here are some pictures of the amps in old Sherwood amp chassis

Clave the parts I used was with best parts on your recommended XLS BOM not the latest around the time I bought them about a year ago, the main problem for me is that it is not sensitive in the mid range the voices are not balanced and the bass is boomy at times in my system, maybe the output cap needs changing to mod the sound. Any Ideas?

The MyRef does not have an "output" cap. It does have an input cap, which is the Mundorf. The Mundorf cap does not produce flabby bass or weak mids, so changing that will not turn a sow's ear into a silk purse.

Try a different pair of speakers, or put your MyRef into a friend's system. There is probably nothing wrong with your MyRef amplifier. The sound of a MyRef is certainly not what you describe. Perhaps your Dynaco valve amp is a better match for those speakers and you have gotten accustomed to the sound.

Is your build an integrated amplifier with volume control? Check that, too. Do you have a separate preamp you can use with the MyRef?

What are you measuring that reads -13.4?

Peace,
Tom E

It's possibly related to Caddocks sound signature.

I'm going to work now, this evening I'll say you more.
