My take on a BoomBox

Profiguy,

I'm aware of the benefits of high efficiency when it comes to battery-powered speakers, and it's the reason I'll be including SpeakOn outputs, so that the Zoudio amp can be used to feed other loudspeakers if higher SPLs are required. I have some 2x10"+HF speakers, for example, that are about 103dB@2.83v.

With regards to run-time, though, I picked up a drill set with 2x 5Ah 18V batteries, and also a 2Ah battery that goes with the set. I plugged the 2Ah battery in on Monday, and have used it for about 4 hours each evening at background levels. The battery is currently reporting <25% charge, but hasn't cut out yet. Assuming it survives this evening, that'd be approximately 20 hours of run-time.

While I'm aware that's the absolute maximum rating, it's still pretty impressive. Higher volumes will, of course, empty the battery much faster.

So far, the 2x tweeters at +/- 45 degrees works okay, but I'm still considering omni options. The difficulty is finding a tweeter that can cover 4kHz-16kHz while staying somewhere near omnidirectional.
Having read through the omni-related thread linked above, I'm hoping to avoid reflectors. They seem to bring another set of compromises. That said, a reflector that works >10kHz (ie, where it's needed) would probably be pretty small...
