my own DIY CD PALYER

Hi everybody,

I plan to build my own CD player in the coming months and I'm in the way to gather as much information as possible. I've read lot of threads in this forum (as well as others) and unless I did not understand, many points remain dark 🙁

Let's sum up what I've already decided :

1- The philips CDPRO2 will be the drive. I bought it last week and I'm still waiting for the delivery :bawling:

2- the dac will be made of 2 TDA1541a in parallel (I2S input signal from the CDPRO2). This is the dac created by torben kirsten that I find very simple to build. Its output stage is made of tubes.

3- My first issue is the controller. I'm still looking for it, eventhough I have looked into the controller made by BrianGT. But i did not understand how it works. Maybe he could help me ?

4- As regards the PSUs, this is quite more difficult. I do not have sufficient skills to compute how many milli-Ampers are required for the drive and the dac, eventhough I looked carefully at the spreadsheets. Therefore, I could not rate the transformers. Actually, I want to make 3 PSUs : one for the +5V of the dac and the drive, the second will provide the 12V for the drive and the controller and the last one will be dedicated to the output stage (tubes). Each PSU will have is own transformer.

There exists thousand of regulated PSUs, which one to choose :scratch: ???

5- At least my last concern is the clock. I've read over there several comments about clock and jitter issues. Some of you have changed the crystal provided with the CDPRO2, some of you built an external clock that drive both CDPRO2 and dac.
I must admit that I do not understand the differences between these two possibilities and then, I could not decide what is the best for my CD player and which is the simplest to implement. :scratch2:

Should my english not beeing good, I would apologize. Nevertheless, I hope that my questions are clear..

About the controller:

Nico supplies a controller which u can hook up to the cd pro, with easy. That might be an option.

About the psu`s:

I used the schematics from http://www.geocities.com/agalavotti/cdpro.htm Its a pretty straight forward one, and it works fine -for me-

I used 3 transformers, 2 x dual 12 volt, and one 24 volt.
With the 12v`s I made 2x5v psu`s one for the cd pro and one for the controller. Then I made a 9 volt psu for the cd pro motor and I used the 24v one to create the power for the display.

All my toiroids are something like 1 amp max, which would make for 50 Va to be sufficient. And thats quite overdone, as most the psu have to deliver not more than a few miliamps -max 400-

12 volt for the drive is quite a lot, I think. I used 9.8v maybe its possible I don`t know.

Build or buy a clock from Elso or Guido, they will most certainly know what is best. I`m thinking of biulding/buying a clock and put it in the cd pro, reclocking doesnt make scence to me. But its all up to you.

Looking at the datasheet of the 1541A, the input voltage is +5V. The two others voltages (6V & 235V) are required for the output stage . That's why I precised that I will use a dedicated transformer for this stage, to provide these two voltages.
 
Well,

after wrinting down all the necessary voltages required for both CDPRO2 and the dac :

1- +/- 5V 1A for both CDPRO2 & DAC
2- +9V 1A for CDPRO2
3- +12V for CDPRO2 (flash of the µC). It might be suit for the contrroller
4- +15V 1A for DAC
5- +235 V et 6V AC for the output stage (tubes) of the DAC

With so many voltages, the PSUs are not easy to built, aren't they

That's why I'm looking for the best compromise between dividing the PSU's and decreasing the number of transformers...

I am currently working on a controller, but since you are in Europe, it would be easier for you to get one from Nico.

I wrote my controller from scratch, and is still in the development process, and many features will be added in the future. Here is my latest prototype:

I assume that "Nico" is the guy from daisy-laser ?
Well, With a friend of mine, we are designing our own controller, based on several found among the net. He's more comfortable with pics. I'll post the shematics as soon they will be completed. 😉

Hi everybody 🙂

I just want to advise you that I've ordered a dedicated transformer that will provide :

2*12 V 30VA
2*9V 30VA
2*6V 30VA

this transformer, a torical one, has been ordered to magnetic.

The +/-5V for both DAC and transport will come from the 6V as the 15V for dac will come from the 12V 😉

Its size is 100mm diam, 50 mm height

Do you think this is a good idea ?

Hi,

attached is the +/-5V PSU used for the DAC.

Those are eagle 4.09r formated files.

Any comments (scheme and board) ?

The resistor values R4 & R10 are wrong, there will be closed to 130 Ohms (calculation = (5-4)/0.0075) in order to have more than 7.5mA through the zeners

I will post the JPG files later on.
