Are Hypex class D plate amps considered to be "classD junk"?Sound quiality of plate amp depends on the plate amp you select. They come from classD junk to top noth hifi.
It's been difficult to find a great plate amp for biamp/Xover function at reasonable prices. Any examples of good ones?
By classD junk i mean something like this:
https://www.parts-express.com/Clear...s-D-2.1-Bluetooth-4.0-Amplifier-Board-320-634
https://www.parts-express.com/Lepai...th-Aux-3.5mm-Input-and-Control-Panel-310-4000
https://www.parts-express.com/Lepai...Channel-Mini-Plate-Amplifier-TPA3118-310-4002
I have not said that all classD plate amplifiers are junk. Those mentioned above make so much interferrence that you can actually hear buzzing in fm radio. You know its junk by miniscule power supply and barely any heatsink used on amp itself and plate amp power is quoted at 10% distortion.
I do not personally know every plate amp, therefore can not comment on hypex. But i used few dayton plate amps. Some have actual power transformer, yes, linear power supply and classAB power amp with high quality opamps in eq section.

Troels certainly knows how to design speakers and crossovers, I assume he selects great plate amplifiers for his projects:

Some well made classD plate amplifiers:

Sorry Plott, I promise I will not polute your open baffle thread with classD plate junk anymore.
It is much better to use a Pass active crossover. If I am not mistaken, there should be one which is adaptable for Open Baffle EQ.
Then, you will have the freedom to try various amps, to find one which is best suited for the fullrange (in my case it was an F2, now Zen V8 , or F3), and the amp which is best suited for bass. It could be an F5, but any reasonably good class AB amp might work. (I used a Sony amp, now use an Onkyo, but you may also use a Krell 😀 ).
Using plate amps with their internal crossover will work, but: they don't have the bass EQ that is needed for low Qts woofer on OB, and it was exactly this EQ that made the difference...

The Hypex Fusion amps do.Using plate amps with their internal crossover will work, but: they don't have the bass EQ that is needed for low Qts woofer on OB,
Hypex FAxxx don't have any preset specific EQ options, the user must give all as parametric or biquads. As well gain, polarity and delay settings. Preferably based on measurements
I guess the bashing of plateamps derives from subwoofer models which often don't have dsp or NCore amps. Eg. Hypex DS series.

Marchand makes high quality subwoofer amplifiers, so does Bryston. But no personal experience with any.
https://diyaudiostore.com/products/eq-for-full-range-driversI meant FW with an active crossover, from Pa, for example.
I wouldn't say that DSP is only right way to do it but, as Adason said, give you complete freedom of crossover design and EQ the response. Some PC or rpi based solution are the best due to compute power but Hypex plate amp with DSP or miniDSP flex ( if you already have the amps) are more than enough. Price is justified considering price of passive elements for proper crossover.
I used Hypex (https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/ultimate-open-baffle-gallery.123512/post-6669937) and miniDSP flex (https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/ultimate-open-baffle-gallery.123512/post-7921586), both, with close to excellent results.
In the last system I am using Erica's D modules for subs, LM 3886 based amps for woofers and mids and recently add F5 for ESS tweeters.

Maybe, but I use turntable too, and I don’t want to convert ADDA. Further, I use SACD player where the digital signal isn't available.
So dsp is out for me.
So dsp is out for me.
There are, somewhere on internet, results of more than 100 adda in raw conversions test which show no degradation in signal. My project with Hypex used only analog input as owner wanted to keep his preamp in chain. We compare it with all other inputs and nobody could say the difference.
Proper acoustic crossovers slopes, drivers timing adjust and fine shaping of the responses, possible with DSP, will be noticable, for sure

From my side it has nothing to do with ideology.
I'm simply not ready to AD-convert a high quality analog signal and than back DA... And as I wrote, I use an SACD too - no chance to get the digital hi-res signal, only the "dumb" CD quality. And yes, it's audible.
So, for me, no DSP, once and for all.

No need for the DSP. I was advocating the use of Nelson Pass active analog crossover, which is jfet based, and truly "transparent" with no loss of signal quality. No ADDA conversion. 🙂
