My open baffle journey

Hi,
after determining that the SB 15OB350 not really works (practically no bass in the series xo, not even with two in parallel) I went back to the trusty EA15A and now the sound is gorgeous. The EA has great bass (it always had, I just wanted to use something different...) and the musicality of the 1808 in this combo is just great - I've never had this sound quality until now.
I of course will try parallel xo too with this drivers and the booster solution of @perrymarshall for the 15OB...will see.

Exact my review too with the 1808 and EA with my PAP clones, https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/ultimate-open-baffle-gallery.123512/post-7808646

@Plott so far with my experimenting in 2 different rooms with now permanent placement in the basement with carpet, they do need lots of breathing space both sides and back. I can do that with back but one of the sides has a wall with no room for adjustment having a 100" projector screen 🙂

It still sounds fabulous with AN39 amp with 4R version makes the base to shake my basement, very realistic and unlike any other bass modules one can experience. Got some CNC cut file of the wings from another member need to see how to get that done to replace the existing simple straight panels. Coming summer project.

I saw your posts on another thread about this. I was wondering: have you tried the SB 15OB350 and 1808 with a parallel crossover?

Just an idea: SB 15OB350 could probably work in a big vented box, i.e. a Basszilla kind of speaker...
Ok, that won't be a full Open Baffle any more, but if it could fit as a secondary (big bedroom?) system it could rock 😀

Hi,
now, a significant change: two plus EA15A woofers, the xo is still a series one.
The woofers are in parallel, so the impedance goes below 4 ohms... to about 3,6 ohms, at low frequencies.
So not very fine with FW amps, or at least I'm not that fearless. That's why I put a 2 ohms resistor after the woofers... which also requires a further 2.xx ohms to tame the FR.
The sound: unbelievable good. Now I use my commercial Rega Elicit-R amp which suits really perfect (I sold my class D monoblocks and the HyperSET to a good friend with a pair Magnepans, he really wanted the amps... and I'm very glad, because the combo replaces a Krell (A KRELL!!!...) amp in his system. So I have to build them again, but that's another story).
So, to the sound: it is really gorgeous. The second woofer gives more details to the lower mids too and of course stronger bass, and more body. Now I use a toroidal inductor on the woofers (have to by an iron core one... but it sounds really good).
Disclaimer: this speaker is not a PAP clone, even if it looks similar. My baffle is wider, and the baffles have different dimensions. I use wings with a shape, which was determined by listening sessions. If you read the first post you will know where I started (not knowing the PAP speakers): it was the big Manzanita. I kept the width of the baffle and "sliced" it into 3 parts, that way I could change the drivers easily. So again, no PAP.
I think, in the final (what???  ) version I will go back to a full baffle, because the 3 (or 2) part versions resonate... that's why I fixed them together with metal plates.
@MEPER no, no EQ for the woofers, everything is strictly passive.
Now, they look like this, at this stage:

So watching your thread closely. I am starting my first OB build and planning on the Manzinita to start. Thinking about using a DSP to play with since I have so many channels of amplification laying around. Maybe convert to a hardwired XOVR after that. Would like to think that an active with high quality amps would sound best but maybe not?? What baffle mock up can I purchase to start with? heavy gage cardboard, Foamboard, Cloroplast?? Where can I purchase any of these?
