my no name speakers with bassreflex suck

Hi Chris,

My main problem with ported/transmission line/folded horn/tapped horn et al. is the almost universally large amount of poorly damped energy stored in the system. This can be seen clearly in the step response of such enclosures which is inevitably awful; in particular with Helmholz Resonators, or ported enclosures as we call them.

Hi Carl, i keep meaning to ask ...
do you have any measurements of subs that show the step response problems you speak of ?

Not sims, just real measurements of subs alone. (Alone is key ime).

I find it very difficult to get simple impulse responses of subs alone, much less a step response.

Love to learn how if you've found a good way.

you sure never heard well executed open baffle bass
see linkwitz (rip) site for open baffle bass

+1 for open baffle bass.

Something special.

Needs a lot of room, not good if you have a small listening area.
To get around this in my small apartment i place the speakers in front of an open window to allow more air for the speakers to breath.

Speakers basically push the air behind them forwards towards the listener, the more space / air behind them the better. Open more windows and place the speaker in front of the window.
Another good tip which i love is to cut a hole, which in my case leads to the kitchen, then the drive unit uses the kitchen as the enclosure.

Just my rant for small rooms.
