Re: W Baffle Dipole Sube w/PPA15s
This past weekend I replaced the PPA15s with Dayton 15" IB woofers from Parts Express. I've got to say, these are a HUGE improvement in
my system, well worth the extra $65/driver...
Peace

Hi Roscoe,
Nice set of pictures, and nice loocking speakers too....
What XO frequency and slope are you using with these woofers?
All the best

Thanks. xover is at about 70Hz, second order...

You just bought those Pyles. What made you decide to replace them so soon, and why?

Re: Re: Re: W Baffle Dipole Sube w/PPA15s
The Pyles were just a proof of concept. I needed more output capability for my fairly large room. The Pyles will probably end up back in those baffles as part of the home theatre after I make some more cosmetically appealing baffles for the main system, which does reside in the living room...
Peace

Maybe you should try some "H-frames" like mine, same size and everything. I have used a bunch of different subs in the past, name brands and DIY, and these dipoles are by far the loudest and cleanest of any of them.
Just my 2 cents. 🙂

Outside dimentions are....
24"W x 24"D x 48"H
Yes they are pretty large, but so is the sound and output. And bass extention is excellent.

The dimentions here is only for your 15" drivers right? Should I use the same H frame for 12" drivers or the H frame has to be smaller accordingly?
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Yeah, the bigger the h-frame, the lower the frequency the drivers will be able to reproduce before cancelling out.
Even if you use the 12" drivers, you could actually build bigger baffles than mine and still sound good. It's only when you start going to smaller baffles that you sacrifice low end extention.
😉
Yeah, sorry about that. For some reason my TZO web client keeps dropping off. It's been doing that on and off now for about a month.
One of these days, I'm going to have to contact them and see what's going on with it. I'm kinda getting p!$$ed with it.

OK I'm real late jumpin on this thread but dang I got some ideas going now. I got Magnepan MG-IIIAs and they're dipole speakers. Id love to try a Dipole sub. I had thought about doing a single stack about 24x71" (about 6 ft high) to match the exact dimensions of a single MGIIIA.
Any pro or con of doing 2 seperate stacks or just 1 stack? I probably cant do 2 stacks the way the room is setup right now, and even 1 may be pushing it at those dimensions...

This is the 10" version of the 15" Pyle Pro PPA speaker. It tests about 8Hz higher across the board on Thorsten "Ezee" Loesch's OB spreadsheet, the 15" hitting 32Hz at 80dB and the 10" hitting 40Hz at 80dB.
Oh right the baffles are the same in both tests, the ones chops used, not taking into account the sides, so they will both likely go lower.
Milo
PPS, with a baffle at 120" by 80" the 10" goes lower than the 15" in the old baffle by about 5Hz. I know, I know, its all just on paper, but its still cool.

how high in freq do you think you can go with a H-frame? W-frame??
You can go as high as the woofer specs allow, but:
Both the H- and W-frame develop a resonance peak. For a W-frame this is where the depth of the W-frame equals lambda/4 (in theory). Practically its ~300 Hz with a 12" driver (depth = 13,4") and ~350 Hz with a 10" driver (depth = 11"). You will have to compensate for that peak (which may easily be 10 dB and higher) with a notch filter and perhaps a Zobel filter, if you want to go higher than 80 Hz.
So the limiting factor will not be the H- or W-frame geometry, but considerations regarding the acoustic localization of the dipoles.
This thread needed to be bumped again..
but I'll add some extras..
made in china drivers
http://madisonspeakers.netfirms.com/rawdrivers.htm
notice 2 speakers in particular:
Executioner 21 and the Knight 15
If there within 10% of spec then they should both be very good for OB use - plus the larger voice coil should reduce THD at lower freq.s, also the eff. will be substantially higher (though perhaps not as spec'ed) - build quality appears several steps up from the pyramid woofers. What you'll give up is bit more cash (for the 15 inch Knight vs. the Pyramid 15) and half an octave in extension.
This place has the 15's in stock but not the 21's.
