Hi DIY members,

My Marantz CD80 was not working properly. It was skipping after 1st, 2nd track. I disassemble the motor and tried to clean it. Afterthat, I reassemled it and played, the player does not respond at all and few lights at front panels also turn on all time. I look and trace everything but can not find any suspicion.

I am really stuck and need your help.

Many thanks Jean Paul,

I put in the laser head of CDM4/19( fully working) in two days ago and the player was working the same. Skipping, skiping!!! so i clean the motor!!!. By the way, thank you for you mod instruction on the CD80. Most of my mod based on that.

Regards.

Ahem, I would not call myself an "expert", I am just a person with a abnormal interest in CDM's. A nerd so to speak 😀

I did place a CDM 4 laser once in a CDM 1, it worked. Alignment was more a case of luck really. I recall I checked lasers and some of the CDM 4's I have were not 100 % equal. I had a used one that seemed identical.

Thank you for reminding me as I have a cdplayer right now with a broken CDM1 ! Although it sounds stupid I am still searching for new CDM 1's and the thought of using CDM 4 lasers hadn't come up. I am not very familiar with CDM 1 and I can't remember if the CDM 1 at that time was a Mk I or Mk II. I focus more on CDM 4 and CDM 9.

CHLO, I think you should replace the motor with another one. Plenty of broken cdplayers with wornout CDM 1 lasers around. Maybe the one in a Philips CD104 will do the job ? I am not sure if they're the same. Did you resolder the connectors ?

Thanks a lot for the answer.
I have two working Marantz CD players with CDM 4/19.
And I have other player with CDM1/MKII that doesn't detect the disc.
I put both cdm's apart and the arm/laser look really identical.
I put the one from CDM4/19 to CDM1/MKII - doesn't work.
I also try to put arm/laser from CDM1/MKII to working cd player with CDM4/19 (just in case it's not the laser that is broken) and it doesn't work either.
Now ,i don't know wheather the CDM1/MKII is broken (lens or motor) or there is something wrong with the player itself.
It's strange that it actually spins the CD but shows 00:00 time.

If I knew those two must work becouse are identical it would be easier.

Jean Paul,does CD 80 use CDM1/MKII?
Do you know any other, cheap players that have it ,and can be the source for this mechanizm.

I have the link to the list of Marantz/Philips players and used transports but it's been dead for the past three weeks

Hi Jean,

Thanks for suggestion.

I have checked the solder points many times but could not find anything disjoint. I will do it again soon!. I also checked the CDM model in Philips CD104 (some pictures this forum) and it is different from the one in my cd80. I think it may not be swapped. The one I ‘ve seen similar is in Meridian CD Pro.

Chlo,

I just talked to the guy who is an expert at CDM transports.

The transport in Philips 104 is CDM1.You,in your CD 80 have CDM1/MKII,these two are quite diffrent.

He also told me that there is no chance that CDM4/19 laser/arm will work in CDM1/MKII.

The transports that arm/laser is the same as in CDM1/MKII are:
CDM2 and CDM4/31.

All Best

This lucky guy still has 4 pieces brand new CDM 4/31...

I meant mechanical alignment of the swingarm, please see a service doc. to understand what I mean.

Please realise that CDM 1 was produced with selected diodes whereas CDM 4 uses unselected ones. That said, some do work in CDM1. The one I repared with a CDM 4/?? laser was a Philips CD880.

As I said before, CDM 1 is not very familair to me and I am glad to have the right numbers, Bartek. Where did your friend find this info ? I have information on these CDM's but I can not find which ones are replaceable for other types. It can't be they all have different ones. For instance CDM9/44 and CDM9/65 look 100 % equal but I did not dare to use a CDM9/44 in a CDM9/65 cdplayer especially since they become very scarce too so frying one would be a shame.

Chlo

The CDM 1 from the link above is diffrent from my CDM1/MKII!
Top view is the same ,but underneath it looks totaly diffrent to mine.

Where can I find this service doc?

The guy knows a lot about those players ,have had lots of them and has quite big expirence in modyfying them (I think you know more secrets about electronics mods of these oldies!).
He claims tha CDM2 and CDM1/MKII are the same drives, the only diffrance being alu. chassis in CDM1 and plastic one in CDM2.
CDM4/31 is suppose to have identical arm/laser but probably a bit diffrent construction (motor or something else).
He also says there is no comparison between CDM1 and CDM1/MKII,the first being much superior to second one.

What cought my attention in my CDM1/MKII is beautiful motor. It works very smooth and silent, great thing. Also alu chassis is great.
I would love to get this players workin as my other player is 98% the same accept for CDM4/19 drive,I could compare them sonicly.

Hi,

That's because the first picture shows a CDM-3 (metal arm) and the second a CDM1/MKII !

So there are these swingarms:

CDM0
CDM1
CDM3 (see post(s), use search)

same square shape (there is a post on this, search):
CDM2 (plastic green/white)
CDM1/MK2 (alu)
CDM4/31 (plastic black)

CDM4/19 and others
CDM9 / CDM9 pro

Greetings,

OK. ,now things got complicated a bit!

It seems that my player with CDM1/2 has dead lens and broken motor servo (maybe some dried eletrolitics caps).
It happend that two players have identical mounting holes for transport/drewer so I can replace whole transports from one player to another. Now,there it goes:

The CDM1/2 transport chassis with arm/lens from CDM4/19 works great in Marantz player that orginaly has CDM4/19.

The CDM1/2 transport with arm/lens from CDM4/19 doesn't work in player that originaly has CDM1/2

The whole CDM4/19 works in the player that has CDM1/2 transport but only when I spin the CD with hand to give it some speed, otherwise it doesn't.

So it seems that depending on the player CDM4/19 arm/lens might actually work as exchange of CDM1/2 arm/lens.

cdm 4/19

Looks like a few people in here know about CDM series, hope someone can help.

Have Technics SL-PJ38A with CDM 4/19 pickup

Fitted new pickup, still no joy. Anyone any idea where on pickup to measure laser voltahe/current and tracking voltage?

Hi,

first just look: put NO CD in the drawer and hit play:
- does the arm move? (to the centre, disks are read inside to
outside)
- does the diskmotor turn (a few times)
- does the laser work

For the last thing you can look into the laser AT AN ANGLE.
You can see a faint orange glow (darken the room a bit) around
the lense.

Dont look straight into it and don't do this if you feel unsure.
This is AT YOUR OWN RISK. Measuring is better and safer, i agree.
But i don't have the details for CDM4 at hand.

What is the chipset in you player, anything philips?

Greetings,
