If the frequency of the drive signature is 20kHz or greater, it would appear that the driver transformer is shorted.
I have a junk MTX 81001D with a friver transformer in it.. Will the driver transformer from the 81001 work in the 801 or are they different?
Thanks Perry,
The transformer was shorted.. Replaced it with the one i pulled from the 81001D and have good drive signal on Pins 8,11

Amp powers up and plays clean audio..
When i try turning the gain pot up the test speakers flutters and the amp will draw excessive current for about a sec and then goes back to normal..
Any ideas ??
May a bad gain pot or what can i check??

I would suspect the VCA (voltage controlled amplifier - 8-pin SIP IC in the preamp section).
Remove it and connect a 1k ohm resistor from pin 1 to pin 8. Does that eliminate the problem?

Replace it. If you pull one from another amp and the problem returns, it was likely defective as well. This is a VERY common failure.
Mouser has them. There will be 3 different grades with corresponding prices. Any of the 3 will work.
