very interesting topology; a lot of variable resistors (from bourns) on board - one pc for voltage gain at input, 4 pc for bias (2 pc for each half), 6 pc for cascoded heads (3 pc for each half) and 3 pc for the choice/matching of current for the input stages.Nelson Pass; 2043768 from post #34 said:Are you referring to this?
😎
Is the goal the perfect matching of both amplifier halves?
Are you sure, that this mirror symmetric topology (i. e. N-CH + P-Ch J-/MOS-FET's) provide same results than a CSPP (circlotron) topology like e. g. SUMO "NINE" (please ignore the fact, that there are BjT's instead MOSFETs and the output)?
My estimation is that by a circlotron topology the matching between the two halves is more easy to reach.

Darn! One just plants a simple question to ask for an update and when you check back a few days later, there's a whole chain with good stuff waiting!
Yarrr! 😀
Yarrr! 😀
My lips are sealed.
😎
We have ways of making you talk!
Baaaaaaaaaaa.
😉
Look at the vestibule pic. Compare the size to the amps on the other side.
These things are HUGE!
I like em!!!!
Can't wait to learn more about them!
I can picture the Pass marketing materials now... "During these challenging economic times, we at Pass Labs realize the importance of multifunctional purchases. While easily achieving audio nirvana, our new PlasmaArc amp topology is also capable of 300 amps of continuous output at 100% duty cycle. We have chosen to supply these amplifiers with a tig torch adapter and 1/0 speaker wire that also doubles as welding cable, to help maximize the return on your investment. Simply pop the included high frequency tig cd into your cd player and start welding... Track one is for aluminum, track two is for mild steel, and track three is for exotic alloys..."
"While we realize that our sun has not yet become a red giant, we felt it important to do our part to help the process along by creating an alternate, easily accessible, home plasma source."

There's more: "If you aim to create a giant black hole, these are the only amps capable of driving huge electromagnets. They did not use Pass amps at CERN, thus the experiment failed" 😛

I should not read more about these amps. I don't wanna know. Where is Firstwatt? What? Aha, ok, this amp is "Firstwatt x 1000".... 😎
I went to a lot of trouble having 4 working copies for
the show in time, but it was not possible to operate them
on the display electrical allotment given by the hotel.

Nelson when booking the room for next year's CES...
"Good afternoon, this Nelson Pass of Pass Labs.
We would like to reserve an entire floor of the hotel for next year.
Does it have forklift access? Oh, it does! Great!
Do you offer a complete floor discount? Hmmm, Ok... Does it matter that we are working under a grant from the US Department of Energy? Oh, it does! We get the Govt rate? Outstanding!!!
Would it be a problem if we brought along a small generator set to supply our power needs? This year's facilities were completely inadequate and we were very disappointed... I assure you it's very quiet. No problem? Excellent!!!!
Oh, and how many parking spaces do we get? Ah... Perfect!
Sure my credit card number is....
Thank you for your help!"

i have heard people complain about the power at these shows, but this is terrible. I guess there no 20A plugs? Maybe a 3am special demo could have been done?
The way it works is you are provided an outlet box which
you must use which triggers at (I believe) at 1,000 watts.
The first time they reset it for free.
The second time they charge you a packet.
If I recall correctly, they shut you down on the 3rd time.
This is all intended to prevent displays from overloading
and bringing down the whole floor.

How long has the CES been in Las Vagas? They should have the capacity. They know trade shows use a lot of power. I guess CES is a good time for the Class D guys to get one up on the power hogs.

Do these amps idle at kilowatt level?
Any plans for optional cup holder for coffee, tea or gluhwein? 🙂Yes.
😎
A bit off topic, but about big amplifiers: Years ago at a hifi exhibition here, Mr Bladelius made them supply 3x32 Amps power from an outlet in the building basement so he could demo a prototype amplifier. But that one never came in series production 😀
Do these amps idle at kilowatt level? NP: Yes
By use for very high quality public address (PA) applications (e. g. open air classic-, jazz and blues festivals) idle loss power at kilowatt level does not a matter (even not, if there are 40 devices of this amps for modes with active crossover). For today's light show devices much more power would be needed.
Such festivals would be an ideal test environment (perhaps with top class public address line array loudspeaker equipment from "Stage Accompany", McCauley or "Alcone").
There is no risk of collapsing main voltage - as I know.
