To me the most genuinely depressing material is played on the radio every day.
Well, I know this is not what was meant, so I'd say Double Dare by Bauhaus. I always get a funny feeling when I listen to this track. Just simply brilliant.

without a doubt "Victim" from The Golden Palomino's dead inside cd.
perhaps more disturbing rather than straight depressing - it's a harrowing listen.

Maybe I'm just sick, but I don't find Shostakovich N° 14 sad.
Powerful, disturbing, frightening, yes. But not sad. Well, unless you think about it. Then it's sad - but not the music itself.
Speaking of Russians and the “Great Patriotic War” did you ever see the film by Elem Klimov “Come and See.” ? “Idi i Smotri” . Now that is frightening - and in the end very, very sad. Strange stuff.
"The End" - The Doors
"The Needle and the Damage Done" - Niel Young

Federico,
With all the seriousness around here, your humour is just what the doctor ordered. 🙂

And Laurie Anderson on 'Bright Red/Tightrope', especially the songs 'World Without End' and 'Tightrope'. Some very depressing images on an otherwise excellent album. Keyboard licks by Brian Eno give the perfect dark tone to this album.
The version of Hearbreak Hotel sung by Nico, with Kevin Ayers, John Cale & Eno, the live album July 1 1974.
The Gothic horror version, as compared to Elvis' wipped cream original.

I couldn't find it mentioned, but if I could understand the words, I am convinced Yellow Ledbetter would be the winner.
"Yacht Rock" (the smooth rock genre from 1976-1983) really bums me out man.

Nobody's mentioned Nick Cave yet. I'd name some tracks, but I'm I'm too down to pick one.
And some mid-late 70s Neil Young

Too right - bland happy clappy music always depresses me a lot more than Nick Cave, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Slipknot and the other usual suspects...
I always go for *the rope* whenever I hear Celine Dion or Mariah Carey squeal...yodel...er...sing! 😀
Just about any song that features the truck driver's gear change does it to me - you can usually spot it coming from quite a distance. Honourable exception is My Generation.
