Dear djk,
For ZENV4, the input impedance is 47k. For original ZEN it was only 4.7k. Transfer function of the ZEN was greatly dependent on output impedance of the preceding signal source, as ZEN is an inverting circuit. This was especially problematic for earlier version (4.7k input impedance), now it is better. The mosfet follower was my reply to the original ZEN, ZENV4 is much newer design.

3V zener is the one marked as ZD3V in the schematics (connected between base of TIP141 and GND. 18V zener is a protection to the mosfet. Small diode rated at 0.5W or 1.3W is OK.

A Transient voltage suppressor is not a regular zener, it is used to protect an appliance from voltage peaks that might occour.

And the fact that it is in a sample list doesn't make it more suitable than a few cents' zener (readily available in every electronic shop).
