Hello! I am interested in repurposing an amp to build a modulus 86 amp. I have successfully built a tube amp from a kit (Elekit tu 8200), following all directions. The Modulus 86 project presents a significant jump in challenge for me, because I don't have any real background in electronic circuitry, but I can solder and follow directions. Would you be willing to guide me in a basic way, as to which wires I need to use from a scavenged amp/transformer, and how to hook them up to the 86 and its power supply boards? I may try to find a Sonamp 260 if you are willing to guide me. No problem if you don't have the time. Thanks for posting all this!
Sourcing the lm3886 may be difficult, they are backordered until next year. And I dont trust the authenticity of any on ebay. However, i was able to get mine from a place called Dal audio. Also, if i were to do it again I think i would use a different power supply. The meanwell works fine, but mounting them in the chassis was a bit of a joke. I had to grind material off of the torroidal transformer mount and i ended up just ziptieing the top power supply to the bottom one until i figure something else out. I think i wouldve rather used either a torroidal supply or one of the all in one boards recommended on the Neurochrome website. However, those ship from china and i would have had to wait much longer.
Thanks for your response! Sounds like I might have to wait on the project because of the backorder. At any rate, I was thinking of using the transformer that comes with the model amp you used. Did you ever measure the output of it? I know you didn't use it on your project.
Sorry for the late reply, busy week. I wouldnt give up on the project just yet, there are still chips out there, you just have to look a little harder than normal. As far as the transformer, I never measured the output, but i did save it, so ill try to get voltage measurements for you this week
I also just ran into my first issue with the amp. One song just played with extremely heavy bass, and there was a noticeable drop in volume when the bass would hit. Looks like I need to revisit my power supply. I have a couple of 10000 uf caps sitting around, maybe I will try throwing them inline and see if it helps at all. I was told by meanwell thats a bad idea, however its easy enough to try it and remove them if it doesnt work. Ill post back later once i give it a shot.
Thanks. I too got busy. I haven't given up on the project. I'll look out for an appropriate amp and keep an eye out for modulus chips. Thanks. Let us know how your modification of the amp goes.Sorry for the late reply, busy week.
