Modifying the Subbu V3 DAC

Hi, I was just going to answer the same. The label is correct, it would be wrong (by Mouser) if you had searched for the value 390 µF at Mouser, ordered those and got 39 µF...

I guess you ordered on partnumber.

I am now listen with the Salas shunt as a regulator for the ES9023 DAC . . . any one else got any experiense with this?

I still have Fred/PCHW's regulator(s) waiting to be tested. I know you were very interested in the results but I had too many things going on outside of audio. I'll get to it eventually, assuming it's not too much of an imposition on Fred.
Fred - let me know if you're getting impatient and I can return your regulators.
Thanks,
---Gary

With the Salas 1.1fed the JGbuffer. I have no complaint but instead with lots of surprise. I have been showing this combo to different groups of good ears, almost everyone one of them enjoy listening to this dac. It sounds smooth n wide with very good bass. Couple of friends only listen to LP also said they would reconsider buying Cds if I promise to build them one. The problem now is there is no boards available.
I strongly believe there still some room for me to make improvement. Will report.

Hi JP & subbu, HI Garry, Hi fellows

just fill in my BOM at Mousser this morning to beginn my second V3 board... I will come back with accurate 75 ohms BNC line and some tests about PS & hints you gave as well about the values for neg pin (C32/35 &C31/34) this time. I am like the buddha snail with my hobby...

A problem here spoken about V3 is : some has the JG bufer, others not. How to be "objectiv"...

For the moment the " only little problem" I have is a lake of dynamic and weight & flesh in mid-bass... maybe in the high bass (in relation to others DAC chip I have). Low harmonica too thin IMHO, some low mid notes of Piano also. But it's not an opinion as my SPIDF is not of a good quality yet (not 75 ohms, SqueezeBox Duet - assuming this one has less problem with spidf than SB Touch !). And the bass goes low for me, no problem it goes low... just a tonal balance between the low-mid- treble should be better. but I like this Dac very much, the "softness" and lake of crisps in the mid high do it a DAC to live with ! JG buffer from EUVL is here but not populate yet.

I am very interested about PS hints if you have (have already one or two given hints to test 🙂 )

I had also a look at : POWER | H i F i D U I N O , they spoke first about noise, but they measure all the ldo regs with the same protocol for the objectiv results ! but noise is not all of course... my perfectionism "problem" is more tonal balance than noise floor !

cheers

As you current version deviates from the original ......Just build the second one exactly according BOM except for the additional mods that are tested and known. Buy standard RG179 cable with good BNC connectors. Use the original PSU with the BOM parts.

Now compare with the other one. Listen for a week. Then decide if a buffer is necessary. We call it "standard practice" 🙂

Hi JP,

Good idea.

I always listen all the "tweaks" component by component with the same musics on the same system to have a reference. And try when the tweak is good no to move it like you before one day or two to reset my opinion and ears... I do like that from experience (30 years of "bad" hifi ).

To be precise : my current PSU is the BOM one for 230V with:

- C6 : Panasonic FM caps measured at 4.5 uF (datasheet of LM reg said the ideal is 5 uF for a ref for noise !) Would you advise a 0.47 MKT to be closer ?
Other cap technology here ?

-C5: unpopulate ; cause I don't understand why a 0.1 fast cap just after a bridge on the modulated current just after the diode bridge (normal one, not ultra fast diodes with soft recovry) as we use always 1 uF// and the inductance is a common mode one and not alone differentiel one often used elswhere).

-C8 : Green 1828 MKT 0.1 from Vishay :
-C2 & C4 are the Acrylic Cornell DublieR of the BOM

Core Board :BOM but

- the X8 Tantale caps (not the X7R before the ldo reg! Are those 4x X7R a big improvement ?)
- C22 : 470 uF SEPC blessed by you
- C21: 10 uf Silmic II
- C8 & C13 : 22 uF/35 V SEPF (small difference but interessant instead of Panasonic FM 10 uF)
- C35: 3.3 uf Wima MKS2 with 1 uf RX7 for C34
- C17: 1 uF ceramic BulK CK06BX cap (to be changed with Marce fellow hint)
- C4: 1 uF Wima MKS2

Same Same but different !

I have a 2 cents question for you please if you have time:

Has the technology cap a big influence on the ES9023 "analogic" voltage pins:

- C28 charge pump : I would like to test here the 1 Uf acrylic Cornel Dublier?
- C21 Ref cap: a better one than the 10 uF SilmicII? alway the SAL advised ?
- C32: you stay on the 1 uF MKS2 with 1 uF RX7 for C34 (the best for you ?)
- C36 : did you try 1 uF acrylic Cornel Dublier or would you stay with 1 uF ceramic 1210 case ?

Thank you if you have a little time to say to me if you tested those last confs on the core Board.

Eldam,
I previously reported experiments where I listened to different power supplies with just the V3 DAC and then listened to the same power supplies with a V3 DAC and a JG buffer. The results were very consistent between the 2 sessions. So I think there is not an issue. You can do your power supply experiments with just the V3 DAC and be confident in the results.

I have already written about my power supply experiments so there is no need for me to repeat them here. Others are reporting good results with Salas shunt regulators. And the HifiDuino site that you linked to also suggests interesting regulators. So jump in and try them and let us know what you think.

Of course I will Garry

i'm not expecting big differences more a question of flavor as the genuine PS is already noise free (LM 723 reg is good in the Hifiduino benchmark). But the hints you gave me are the first on th elist to test. Maybe there will be a difference of transcient, but for me this DAC has no problem on this side ! In fact I'm working on th eembeded SB duet dac chip and PS & noticed a good bass (but the upper rfange is awfull, something like distorsion). And my old SACD is better with simple CD in bass. But I don't know if it is the fault of the spidf or the sound signature of the ES9023 itself...

Most of the time when JP doesn' t answer to me it's meaning "no" ("i don't test it yet, you boring to me with your questions, think first, etc...."). So I will try the acrylic caps against the blessed version and report. The 75 ohms jack & plug are on the Mouser BOM. sucees to source 1 m of Mogami true 75 ohms !

Garry did you notice difference with the 4 ceramic caps against the 4 tantals ones before the LDO regs (both are blessed) ?

Pfff, you will build it according BOM but then....too many questions, too much info, too much deviations just in 1 post. Sorry, in my humble opinion your method is "pleasant chaos". It would bring peace of mind to build it just according BOM with mods by GaryB and concentrate on a nice metal case with good placement of PCBs and such. I think you can win some points there 😉

I can't speak for Gary (I got the impression he thinks alike 😉) but V3 is a finished project for me. Believe me that I tried a lot of caps in this design but I can't test all possible variants ! I will make a last version with Niobium caps and will compare that one with all the others I have but it is time to move on for me. New designs have to be done. If things go well (testing !!) we will be presenting a new simple device within a few weeks/months from now.

I was just titillate you 😉 . I know that you think it's details.

It's cooooool you have a new project !

You will say to us if you like the nobium caps here.

Good luck for your project and thank you for the V3 (great adventure to me than soldering smd for the first time !)

An adventure indeed. The thought of again a DAC project and GB gives us shivers 😉

No DAC this time but I think you'll like it. I put extra time in searching nice caps for this little project because of you 😀
