I'm looking for something to keep myself busy since I'll be having more time at home than usual with everything closing for a few weeks.
I'm thinking it might be fun to make another speaker. I've done the Overnight Sensations before and the two sets of the Zaph ZA5.2 before.
My main problem is I don't need another set of speakers and I have nowhere in mind to put them so it makes it harder to pick a build because there isn't a spot they will necessarily fill. I have a SS 80 watt per channel, a PP tube 20 watt, and a SE tube at about 7 watts. Two of my locations the speakers end up pretty close to the rear wall and in the 3rd they are about a foot and a half away. Unfortunately, don't have anywhere with enough room to use a design that has to be several feet away from the wall like an open baffle.
All I have is a circular saw and handheld router. I prefer to stay to a simpler design. I have stayed clear of the ones with elaborate internal bracing. My abilities are limited to building, not designing so I prefer proven designs with build plans that don't require any tweaking and if I can get a complete kit with everything from one place it is that much better.
My three top choices at this point are:
CSS P215 SHOP | css-audio
Zaph SR71 Zaph|Audio - ZA-SR71
GR Research XL-S Encore X-LS Encore kit
I realize that none of these would really be efficient enough for the SE amp but efficient and diy box don't seem to go together.
The CSS 1TD would also be an option if it is noticeably better than the p215
Anyone have experience with these speakers?
thanks

You have also Wayne PI Speakers kits, plans for free and flat packs with high efficiency drivers. Might be an alternative. Regards

Awesome! thanks, I hadn't even heard of them before.
Also Madisound.
Speaker Kits: Madisound Speaker Components
I currently have the SR71 in my cart there. I'm still bouncing between it, and the CSS 1TD or P215 and just recently added, the way outside my price range, Paul Carmody Carrera to the mix.
These Parts-Express kits include everything except paint or veneer for finishing the cabinets, and are highly reviewed. Both out of stock though currently, and also neither are exactly high efficiency.

With a little ingenuity, you can use the PE knockdown tower cabs like in the Amigas to make my Nephila design from Meniscus. The tweeters are available at Meniscus, as well as the parts and woofers, and I'm sure they could have the cabs shipped from PE to you as well if you wished. That way you'd only need one supplier.

How about,

14 litres
Tributes Full Kit (Pair) - Meniscus Audio
In this box
14.5 liters (volume adjust), etc.
LANA 2.2 - 2 way stand-mount DIY loudspeaker - DIY Loudspeakers Lana
Do it without the wood sides-unstable vs mdf- stable.

It would be better if you provide us with some constraints....do you wan tsomething similar or different compared to zaph 5.2? Do you want deep or tight bass? Any optimal size?
Otherwise, i would also consider rs225/10f FAST build, though it is suggested to buils a «second» enclosure for the upper range driver. And also the micro-statement from «speakerdesignworks» looks interesting if you don't need deep bass or high power.

Seems like a good time to experiment with controlled directivity from a waveguide tweeter to help room placement. There are several econowave designs with a 12" midbass, and a 14"-15" wide waveguide with 1" compression driver. You could build a floor standing cabinet if you desire deeper bass and it fits your room goals. You will find several proven designs on diyAudio, diysoundgroup, PartsExpress, AVforum. Google EconoWave + the woofer you want to use based upon cost, sound, and bass extension.

An Econowave would be your best bet for a first time project. It's under your budget and far more return on investment than many other projects.
OP, if you decide to go with an Econowave, I have a pair of ZilchLab crossover PCBs for the an Econowave project that never materialized. It may take some digging to find them as we moved recently, but let me know if you're interested in them and I'll send them your way.
If you're looking for a small box used in the SR71 or the similar GR X-LS maybe I can help you get going. Small/square boxes like that only use a 1/2 sheet of mdf and a few hours with the right tools/machines.
Although, as you mentioned, they are not high efficiency speakers and might not be what you are looking for.

This is in the same cost range.
10F/8424 & RS225-8 FAST / WAW Ref Monitor
The new TL variant goes very deep to 32Hz.
I have XL-S but this sounds way better since it is transient perfect.

Why don't you try an active setup now? You already built passive speakers 🙂
I'd buy a MiniDSP and then do a Synergy 2-way build. Put them in corner/near the wall and that's it! 🙂

I saw this on you tube and was intrigued by the design.

Frugel-Horn Lites or the FHMk 3 would fit the bill, although the FHMk3 are a little on the large side for you it seems. The lites with drivers would be around $350-$400. They are full range though. Frugel-Horn Lite Kit
