Your friend should be well chuffed with your efforts, Cliff.
I hope he is donating the unused replacement capacitors to you for use in your future projects! 😉

Sometimes I need to step back and reflect on all the things I've learned about speakers.
While doing final testing before returning the Loudspeakers I realized that these particular Tweeters & Midrange drivers are Horn type.
Horn type tweeters are known to be usually brighter than more conventional drivers.
I had the attenuators set to maximum and found I needed to dial them back a little.
Had we been able to go ahead with the replacements caps, maybe the end result would have resulted in excessively bright speakers.
Having experienced these examples, I'd say it would be an advantage to have horn loaded Loudspeakers fitted with attenuators.

For everything there is the right level, and the right response shape.. so it's all relative and therefore just a matter of adjustment.
On the other hand, Smith horns are fairly reliant on diffraction and this may contribute to a unique, perhaps level dependent sound.

You may experience what i stated before too: an issue about Baffle Step Compensation (BSC- sorry we use a lot of acronyms and sometimes give not plain explanation about the terms we use).
True Audio TechTopics: Diffraction Loss
As i strugled a lot with the Lpads settings and never been totally happy with the results long term i suspected the BSC with mine ( and how i located them in room).
Once dialed in it cured the need to play with the mid/high way's levels.
Cliff if you want to try it i can send you files ( tracks on which the filter have been applied) for some test.
It may be your best effort about 'upgrading' them if the owner have not them located on wall, pm me if you want.
And if implemented line level it'll be small format single box to include into your friend set up.
Anyway very nice revival overall. They works, look nice you've done a great jobs. Agreed with Galu, he/she should give you capacitors for the work done.

A good point alluded to there too. EQ, also known in this case as voicing the speaker, is an important thing.. but adjusting the driver levels individually with L-Pads is not the way to do it. If properly usable relative contributions of each driver have been found, they should stay that way. Moving to global EQ achieves this by avoiding changes to the crossover.. although EQ can also be built in to the cross at design time.
L-Pads are good for design by trial and listening as often seen here, for easy access to EQ from when equalisers were less commonly available, for crossovers that are imperfect and trade off a couple of issues throughout the range of adjustment, and for those that like to tweak, as well as for companies that use them for their aesthetic appeal.

Hi Krivium.
Thanks for the BSC information.
At this stage I have too many projects before me.
Currently I am looking at NH 670's (see other thread).
Once again, thank you for your pointers and inspiration. 🙂
Cliff
Allen, I use Firefox and am tired of having to edit unwanted double spaces.Cliff, do you use Firefox by any chance?
Do you know of a fix?
EDIT: I've found reference to a fix here - Post Formatting Issues?
