I tested that Beyma and came away less than impressed. The motor and suspension seem pretty good (no excursion though!) but that cone is SO thin. High order distortion is kind of high and the impedance is jaggy. And look at the CSD! Makes a typical metal cone with it's single high Q breakup look easy to filter in comparison. I wish the cone was stiffer like the B&C 6" and it would probably make for a nice driver. Then again it could sound just fine, but everything indicates to me that you'll want to rip your ears off from the cone problems.
Those Audax drivers look good except for their somewhat high lower cut of point....
One very interesting thing I just read, was a comment on driver damping and loss VS response and dynamics.. http://www.speakerbuilding.com/content/1039/
This seems to make a case for many of the pro-drivers as they are obviously very high efficiency with high Qms, and to some extent the Vifa 17WN 225 which is cited as having "Excellenter dynamik".
Speaking of the Vifa's; Calvin, do you have any idea of what these sell for today? couldn't find any pricing on Mr. Lommersum's web page.
Looking at the Vifa's good efficiency, high Qms, and reputation for good dynamics, I must admitt it looks like a more tempting proposition than some of the pro-drivers with their more jagged responscurves, what augerpro describes sounds like exactly the sort of thing I'd like to avoid...

When it comes right down to it the cabinet is at least as important for transient response as the driver. If you want to get the best out of your driver you must build a cabinet better than the typical.
Thanks for your answer Calvin! 🙂
Those Vifa drivers are definitively on my candidate list for now!

Hmmm.. Visited the Zalytron web-site, and they had some interesting stuff...
One driver that caught my attention in particular was the 6W 4311 B...
I Have listened to some JM lab speakers once (admittedly a long time ago!), and they sounded rather nicely.
Snooping around in the forum threads, I read that Focal drivers were very detailed and dynamic which sounds good to me! 🙂
Anyone have any good (or bad for that matter experience with Focal drivers and in particular the 6W?
I did notice something else which I found very interesting about these drivers, but I'll start off on that in a new thread...

The 18sound 6ND410 seems a rather fine 6.5" pro audio midrange. I've yet to hear it but I have one waiting to go into a bass cab. Nice smooth response curve compared to most similar drivers and excellent sensitivity.

Alex,
Must admit that the driver you mention looks like one of the more promising pro-drivers.
Well, what are you waiting for??!! hook it up to an amp and tell us if it sounds nice and clean or like a 120dB telephone receiver!!😀

Elbert said:I intend to cross these over fairly low, leaving a midrange unit to cover the entire critical 200-2kHz range.

Hi Elbert,
I don't know why I didn't think to this one for your application before today. 😱 A friend of mine is using them in a TMM configuration, yet not filtered, so I cannot tell you some listening issues...but seem promising:

Edit: Proraum is reliable.

Crazyhub,
A very interesting diver in deed! I am perhaps not too enthusiastic about the choice of colour for the basket, but that would be easy to correct compared with other audio related problems! 🙂
Too bad I have already placed an order for some midranges though, But as a Frenchman I hope you will approve my choice of a pair of Access (focal) 6A units from Zalytron. 😉
The price was very favourable, and the datasheet and measurement curve looked promising.
I've also come across several descriptions of Focal's as beeing dynamic and efficient, which is what I'm interested in!
Those l Audax units seem very special with an amazingly high Qms, with reference to my other thread on Q value, they are actualay more interesting than the Access drivers I ordered!
But thank's anyway for drawing my attention to this driver, think I'll do some investigation aroudn the kit this driver was apparently designed for.
Salutations,
Elbert

Oh? Have Audax Flagged out!!??
Well, then it is good to know that I'm backing a French company!
We must look after what little quality industry we still have left here in Europe! 🙂

My mistake: Audax is french again, the present owner is AAC Applications Acoustiques de Composites. I believe it was in Harman International Group in the past few years.Elbert said:Oh? Have Audax Flagged out!!??

And when will Seas, Scan-Speak and/or Focal-JMlab be chinese or indian, that's the real question, not "will these brands become flagged out", haha.
