microTower Revisited

jrKC,

Not sure, but the way you have done the slant/tilt for your mod brings the top of the cabinet very close to the rear of the upper driver diaphragm, and this might lead to some of the reflections from the cone bouncing back.

For a floor-stander with 2 drivers in the front, do a search for "Wessex ML-TL", and have a look at that design too.
The tight chamber at the behind the upper driver is a concern. I'll draft this up to better understand how close it will be and will check out the Wessex. Thanks for pointing me to it. Anyone compare it to the micoTower Castle 15°?

jrKC,

I built both a long time back... from memory, the microTower Castle with the angled up firing drivers had a more diffused presentation; the Wessex had a more precise image. I built the Wessex with the narrow baffle; probably should have chosen the wider baffle version. 🙂

Progress shot of one microTower.

Progress.
4 oz of acousta-stuff damping material teased in the upper 2/3 ish (to bottom of brace) in one cabinet. Bass is slightly heavy and kinda boxy sounding. (Surprised by amount of pressure at the port at this volume).

Thoughts ?
Tease more and reduce amount of damping?
More damping?

Second box, I may hook up with only upper lagging and without acoustic-stuff to compare.

Another day, another perspective.
My golden ear son and I compared the 4oz fill with the empty cabinet late last night (+/-12” from wall, recently recapped 80s Fisher BA6000 - balance control was very helpful, and many hours on the drivers in temporary cardboard enclosures). In the shuffling around of cabinets and cords I lost track of which cabinet was which. We both agreed the filled cabinet sounded better…it turned out to be the empty one!
This morning I re-teased the damping material and redistributed with 2oz in each cabinet. I just moved them to my office to their permanent location. My office set up is a work in progress - a combo of Aiyima T9 Pro as preamp + Aiyima A08 Pro. Speakers about 12” from walls with parallel drivers.
I just played side one of Shane Perish’s solo acoustic Repertoire as the first listen.
The microTowers are MAGIC. I’m incredibly pleased with the results. Thank you @planet10 !

I have already built the Free Range EQ, but have not yet connected it, and I have an ACA Mini Amp waiting to be built.

Plus or minus 50 day report on the microTowers (and now driven by an ACA Mini). I'm astonished at the bass and overall quality of the music delivered by the small amp and the microTowers. I was just listening to The Necks "Open" album on Apple Music. Enormous dynamic range in this hour-long piece. I've also been listening to an album called "Placelessness" by the pianist from The Necks (Chris Abrahams) and Oren Ambarchi. Oren Ambarchi's two "Ghosted" albums are a couple others that are kinduv astonishing on my little office system 🤓

Next up . . . I'm looking for a center channel to accompany the pluvia HD 7.2 bipole microTowers. There is of course the wall mount center channel, but I don't require a wall mount solution, and I'm curious about a larger driver that would complement the microtowers such as CHR120 Center, CHR90 Center, or Mar-Ken10.3 Center? (Madisound is out of stock of the gold CHR90 for several months 😕).

Altneratively there is a CHR70 soundbar that may work with a pair of the HD 7.2s, which would match the impedence of the microTowers..

Thoughts?

I’ve been running a modified version of Dave’s MarKen10.3 Centre and Pensils in to HT rig since very shortly after that was drawn, and am still quite pleased. I’m in agreement with Matt Poes and others that an ideal surround system would utilize identical speakers in all locations. While that can get a bit cumbersome for however many height / effects channels you might want to employ* multiples of “bookshelf / standmount” sized systems with proper modern bass management can deliver a lot of bang for the buck.

edit: Overlapping Dave’s immediately prior post, an earlier iteration of my HT rig used the A7.3 version of this, along with Pensil7.3.
It’s “been a minute”, but I can recall not regretting the upgrade to the 10s. If budget and space permitted, I’d be inclined to go r for MAOP 10s for all channels, and hack the ceiling to fit as required😵

Maybe these?
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY DAVE!
Would there be a benefit to having a narrower baffle, say in the range of 170mm-180mm, to reduce the height? I have plenty of space for the enclosure to grow deeper and/or longer. Shorter would be helpful.
I've noted two questions on the sketch.
  1. Is Acousta-Stuf an acceptable damping material for the face of the brace?
  2. Should the 12mm lagging be held back to allow 16mm of clear area before the slot ports?
