Master Nagaoka Tetsuo explorations on matrixed single stereo speakers

Nagaoka's R-101 Hidori is also said to work with Matrix cabling. It looks like an alien sculpture...

Given more free time and place, these would be fun things to try.

I think it can be translated as hydra or something. Certainly looks like one. It's a weird among speakers. I doubt many have been built. Cannot find any with google.

How to matrix connect Hidora ? Some of the elements are pointed inwards, which means sound is somewhat blocked by the construction. Maybe if point all the elements outwards, and then apply 4 element MS-matrix, maybe.

Also the different tube lengths will give different transmisison line effects. But, it could be fun to build it as is (not changing the direction) and paint it in a nice glossy lacquer and then put it in your living room.

Another old cool 1 box japanese design was a kind of scaled down JBL minigon (the very small brother of JBLs cool giant Paragon speaker furniture) with I think FE103 speakers. I saw the plan in a Japanese DIY book, I even saw it on sale once, but sadly I can't find it now by googling.

I just built a foam core SSS (single speaker stereo) and really like it. It is in this thread:

Are you doing a DCR or a SSS with the FF85WK? I hear really good things about those drivers but always wonder if it has enough xmax.

It might be called a mashup of antiquated concepts - perhaps fairly so :) - but simulation seems to check out. I'll post more on that if I proof with a build, possibly in the coming weeks.

The 0.15mm Xmax on my FF125K has never been an issue for me. Seems like the powerful motor has strong "breaking power" (low Qe), preventing from ridiculous excursion below Fb. I don't drive it hard anyway and listen near-field. I think it goes past Xmax quite gracefully too. FF85WK also seems to gently exit its limits and does not complain unless abused.

Probably if you had independent smaller speakers like Maxheadroom mentioned above - or that was how I did it with a couple of Karlsonators and a Nautaloss. Speaking of tuning, you may even try angling it backwards (if you are not flush mounted at the wall).

I'll have to hit the local Indoor / Outdoor market today and see if theres one of those cheap 'home cinema' systems going for a song..... use the sats for experimenting then give it to my god-daughter :D

-------
Cabinet would have to be wall mounted / placed on a shelf...... maybe corner placement would be a go'er?
-----
think your cabinet with its back spanning a corner @ 45deg.

Your cabinet was a bad example, I had the vision in my mind, but it's become fuddled while watching LeMans live feed
I have / had 2 friends who are driving in it this year (I sim-race with them / they suffered a terminal rear suspension failure in the exit of the Porsche curves / large crash before dinner) and am rooting for Porsche 919.

It will come back to me....... I hope.

Back in the day, quite a few amplifiers/music systems had terminals and switching for a pair of 'pseudo surround' rear speakers.
The two 'rears' were effectively wired in series, and switched across the actives of L and R.....IIRC they were wired in anti-phase....ie negs were effectively connected together, and positives connected to L/R actives.

A Nagoaka matrix cabinet at the rear should work quite well.....in my car the high quality loudspeakers are behind me.....that works quite well also

For games maybe too....I have less than zero experience with gaming.

More thoughtssss.....run two Nagaoka cabinets positioned Bose 901 style (faced toward room corners) Bose 901.jpg .
With LR and C coming from, well, left right and center, perhaps beating 901's to the next level !.
It should give fun 'surround' sound everywhere in the room and around the house, and should work very well for general family listening..... and parties.
For more serious listening I expect perhaps not so ideal....again, ala 901's ;).

Does somebody here have the bits and pieces, and the time/resources to try it ??? the cost is a pair of speaker cables and one more Nakaoka cabinet....even the ripple foam lined cardboard box.....good low/zero cost proof of concept  .

For the 4 driver Nagoaka version, one of the mid positioned speakers could be move the the (new) front, again ala 901 style.

My two cents/food for thought.

Soppy,
I like Forza Motorsports on Xbox 360 - very realistic. Just wish I had a real steering wheel / pedal box / shift console and seat to go with it. Hope your friends are ok - which team are they on? Sorry for the off-topic but I can tie it back by suggesting these SSS be used with game consoles for realistic sounds! :)

LOL @ Soppy,
You Sir have unleashed much...... extraction of piddle by my gf.
*sigh

Off Topic:
Forza is good fun compared to other console titles, I race Race07 (PC), mainly mod tracks / cars specialising in proper road courses / GT cars - Nordschleife, Schottenring, LeMans, Targa Florio etc.
I have 2 rigs, one basic and made of wood with an old G25 with overhung pedals, the other metal with a TRS500 - this one was made to be full motion and am Slowly saving money to realise this.

Richard Bradley / Alexandre Imperatori / Matt Howson: #47 KCMG Oreca 03 – Nissan (LMP2)
I'm lead to believe that Richard had passed the car over to Alex and (common knowledge) on exiting the Porsche Curves the right rears suspension failed on the 'negative rumble strips' cut into the newly extended run-off area's surface.
Car spun, wiping out it's drive and could not recover to the pits.
I've only had contact post incident with Richard, he's a bit miffed, but, pro drivers are fearsomely positive creatures and he cant wait to get back at it.

On Topic.
Yes, one of these matrix speakers would, I suspect, be a damn site better sounding than a 'bose' sound bar (my parents have one, it's dreadful).
Dont know about using them as surrounds in 'HT', which I cant see the point in - my stereo pair speakers seem to do the 'Dino / Gunshots' coming from behind trick just as well as the best I've heard.

The design caught my eye a fair while back, before I joined this community and seems to be an ideal substitute for 'docks / bars' but on an 'audiofool' level - sort out design / build nice cabinet integrating an amp module and stream / play music from my phone in our conservatory while gf watches her progs in the lounge.

Now, Moms conservatory is a 2:1 rectangle, mine is about 1.2:1 - hence the question about the angling of the side walls / drivers to get the reflections 'going in the right direction.......
If you made a cube (YESSSS, BAD but this is hypothesizing) with drivers placed on three sides with its Back placed across a corner the side drivers would have their reflective wall.
I will have plywood left over from another project and I've found Faital Pro 4FE35 at a price I am willing to pay.... so I could get the cutting done for both projects in one go :)
