I wonder why no one ever took James Randi's 1 million dollar challenge. Serious lack of confidence and conviction when actual ego and money is involved.
Its about a old witty guy that likes to call out people on their BS. He likes to especially called out BS regarding paranormal stuff like so-called psychics and and such.
He was willing to put up 1 million if a stereophile editor (who praised this one cable as sounding "dancable") could reliably pick out a cable from pear cables that cost $7,000 against a monster cable from best buy (biggest consumer level electronics chain in the US) in a double blind test. Needless to say, they initially made it seem as if they would take the offer but backed out. I could be wrong on some minor details. A quick google search for "james randi cable challenge" would yield a lot of results. 😉

OK... that rings a bell...
I wish somebody would test coat hangers wrapped in shards of dirty underwear... or something...

The brain is wired for self-justification.

I have called this process for self justification some years ago in a topic.
We do not not want to put in a lot of work, rebuild an amplifier, speaker or whatever
and to no result.
And we do not want to spend our money, sometimes lots of money
and discover it was all in vain. Just no result
And the more problems you will have, if you hear no difference
The process of self justification
put a lot of pressure onto you mind to notice any slight improvement.
Just like like a hypnotizer can make your mind see things not real
you can use self suggestion easily.
If your drive, your motivation for it is strong enough,
you will ultimately hear what you want to hear.

Why do people dodge responsibility when things fall apart? Why the parade of public figures unable to own up when they screw up? Why the endless marital quarrels over who is right? Why can we see hypocrisy in others but not in ourselves? Are we all liars?
Or do we really believe the stories we tell?
Renowned social psychologist Dr. Carol Tavris takes a compelling look into how the brain is wired for self-justification.
When we make mistakes, we must calm the cognitive dissonance that jars our feelings of self-worth.
And so we create fictions that absolve us of responsibility, restoring our belief that we are smart, moral, and right — a belief that often keeps us on a course that is dumb, immoral, and wrong. Dr. Tavris is a social psychologist and author of Anger and The Mismeasure of Woman. She has written for the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, Scientific American, and many other publications. This lecture, entitled “Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts,” is based on her new book, co-authored with Dr. Elliot Aronson.
I might do SY,but you too,go for a hearing check up and ear cleaning. It is the cheapest upgrade you can do,and not only for listening to music. In fact, all will benefit with this upgrade. After that many of you might not need further proof for many things.

The problem with a hearing test is that they use instruments, numbers, and science. As such, any findings would be worthless... at least to a believer. Also, the testing is limited to the air to brain interface. I suspect problems of this nature are more confined to the brain itself...

Not likely to help. In a rare agreement with poobah i also think that "problems of this nature are more confined to the brain itself"
In the early eighties i tried all means of persuading a colleague physicist, music lover, to listen to only two sets of cables. He found the notion so profoundly absurd and the entire idea of listening twice in a row to the same piece of music so strange and repugnant that the audition never happened. If he was not so honest with his prejudice, guess what the results would have been.
I would like to ask all the non believers if they have tried an 'upgraded mains lead' whether it was on the source component or amp (or both).
I have tried many mains leads and some (as interconnects) are better than others for their given price and some had no benefit over the boggo ones.

Hi analog-sa,i know it won't help this discussion.I know though that after cleaning his ears,he will have a much better hearing.Removing thick layers of wax from the ears, harmed no one,but surprised many.And.....it doesn't even need any measurements to convince any one.
If not,.........
If not,.........

It's probably been addressed in the 8 pages of replies, but Im plugging it into a many meters of PVC cabled outlet, then onto aluminum service drop...
Whats the 2 meters of cable in between there and amp supposed to do? Tried homemade cable, no idea if it counts as "good", other than it worked. A good plug (contacts) seems the most important part.

No then!!
Also what's the 'aluminum service drop'
The UKs earth loop reading must not exceed 1.2 ohm on 16A ring main using a MCB type 2 (other mcbs require lower loops readings). Where I live the loop readings are 0.23 ohm @ the hifi socket. Using a boggo lead added 0.3 - 0.4 dc ohm which is doubling up the cable resistance. The 'better' cables I have measure 0.02 ohms over 1m using a 8 digit wavetek multimeter (used for calibration of electrical test equipment). This lead does not add to the resistance from the wall, and thats before we get to rfi etc.
I also agree about contact, I use wattgates and MK logic sockets that are all copper inside.

Hi Panicos,
I've looked at the link you gave, I seen that page before, they do have some very nice looking cable 🙂
I dont mind if my mains cable look that good ! 😀
I just mind the $$$ and the actual improvement it made

I fixed a friend's laptop computer last week. I removed the trojan horse infection, unneccessary startup programs and defragmented the hard disk.
She thanked me for these tasks ...... and for cleaning it. I did not clean her computer. She percieved a dirty computer had become a cleaner computer.
In fact, to me, neither was true.
She gave me a reasonably clean looking computer and I returned a reasonably clean looking computer.
Who is right? 🙂
