Well it turned out to be a dirty switch. I cleaned all the switches and pots with Deoxit D5 and no more scratchy sound when flipping subsonic or any other switches. Also, no more channel drop when switching sources.
I think the low frequency was enough to rattle the switch - probably more subtle than me switching it by hand.
At any rate, pre-amp is now dead quiet and sounding better with each hour played.
Is it back to it's "former glory", not sure if there ever was glory for this pre but it sounds good to me and definitely better than before recap. Now makes the dog look around the room in places where the speakers are not which makes me think imaging is pretty good.
Overall this was not a hard job and for me quite rewarding.
I posted the recap list earlier. Now for some photos.

You're welcome dhayes5, I'm happy that you like the result and enjoying your system. Mine is at the shelf waiting for pot cleaning, it developed some scratchy sound at volume knob. I have another stereo preamp I'm using in the system. I feel little convenient to have remote control on my hand. I have to get up only when changing CD, but most of the time I play music on digital player.
