Low cost ES9018 Dac - Builders Thread

I will start my build next coming days. As i understand from Cmiu007 he could feed the dac with Spdif either I2S without having an MCU installed. HE also have problems with SPDIF buffers as he was able to listen to Spdif feeding the Ess chip directly bypassing the 74HC1GU04 gate. Something seems to be wrong with that Spdif signal buffering and it must be something simple. I will see after build 🙂

I already talk about 74HC1GU04 issue, the dac board should be power on without any signal on spdif input otherwise the gate latch-up and draw more current than regulator can provide resulting in a 0Vcc at the regulator output!

One more not validate things!

ES9018K2M diyinhk's board had been a best choice!

Hopefully next days my dac will sing again because it was very strange how it died very bit by bit. First cracling one channel, after crackling both channels and finally complete silence with no lock shown by green led.
All voltages look normal

Good news and bad news. The good news are my dac was working all this time of troubleshooting.
The bad news is that SPDIF input is unusable. SPdif input worked in the first 10 minutes and after that stopped working.
The only way i was able to listen to some music was to feed DAC with Spdif TTL level to BCK input on I2S input. Normal spdif output from my usb>spdif converter is not working.
I attached in input buffer used in this DAC and noticed lack of 75ohm resistor on input.

I'm listening since two days to my DAC and is playing quite good.
Still using external +/-12V power source as the negative rail TPS regulator is not operational.
As source is working in only 2 ways: I2S or Spdif but only TTL level.
The onboard Spdif input is not operational at all. I will try to build an external SPDIF to TTL convertor to see if is working.

I'm really confused why the DAC locks and plays music ONLY if i feed thru ISO7230 isolator. If i try to feed signal I2S or TTL directly to ESS chip no lock no sound no nothing.

Of course i did this mod even before soldering first components.
For me is very strange that i can't apply any kind of signal dirrectly to ESS chip ans is workin ONLY with galvanic isolation. This apply for I2S and SPDIF ttl signals.

I will use separate 5V power supply and not derived from V+ .
A superreg that will provide +5V and will not solder REG2 .
Also the transformer will have separate secondary at about 10V ac with separate diode and capacitors for this .
And a silver mica capacitor of 1nF in position of C12.

Tested with a completely separate 5V power source for digital part as @danzup sugested and for my ears DAC sounds much better.
Meantime i have drilled some holes and installed some vias between ground planes.
Still unable to feed signal directly to DAC only thru IC1 galvanic isolator.
Syllable states that this DAC chip behaves strange when used without microcontroller but i have my doubts about this statement.
