Oh - and if you are like me, you may need to be careful not to get sucked into all the different 'why don't you do this' kind of changes to the design instead of building what has been proven.
I'll repeat my advice on this topic - you can easily go around in circles thinking of all the ideas about what you could do instead of actually doing something. I have spent more time on this forum that building things
Whilst I agree with the advice to get some cheap stuff and play with it - there is a counter argument that says to buy decent stuff (within your comfort zone as to cost) as used well it will sound good plus you can re-use it, but cheap stuff will always sound cheap. Life is short.
