Something that would match nicely together, in a 2 way loudspeaker
I've heard about the audax products, but no particular mid/bass has been specified.
I also heard good things about the Vifa P17, as bad things (old design, better drivers now...)
What can you advice me?
70 and 30 are maximum prices, if I find something good for 50 bucks, and a 20 bucks tweeter, that's no problem 🙂

Monacor
I have used Monacor products in my speakers, and they play really nice.
I've used the DT-250 tweeter and the SPH-165KE as woofer.
Put them in a 15 liter vented cabinet and you are allright.
Check http://www.monacor.com for detalis
and http://www.musicians-gear.net/ for good prices.

Hi,
I use alot of Audax products - simply because they are easy to come by at my local Maplin store (in the UK). I picked up a very reassuringly heavy tweeter for about £20 ~ €/$30. I think it was the TW025M0 or Z0...
As for mid ranges - I like their HDA 170mm range.
Have a look...If you don't like them - you've not missed out too much!

Look at audaxspeaker.de, they have the TM20J7 (Nd-magnet, 20 mm dome) on sale for 12 Euros/piece. According to reviews in Klang&Ton, this is a very nice tweeter.
They also have reasonable prices for their Audax woofers. They have also some samples of Usher drivers (look at Euphase.com or usheraudio.com) which are not in the list. The 8945W is a Scan-Speak 8545 look-alike (17 cm, carbon paper, oversized magnet), but the motor construction is different and probably better (just look at their distortion measurements!). The special price that was quoted to me is a little out of your budget, but not much.
You could order a second pair of the TM20J7 & I'll pick them up the next time I am in Strasbourg 🙂
Or if shipping + higher French VAT (=TVA) is too expensive, I can order them for you.

Hey I've been searching for the same thing as you.
Maybe my budget is a little bit larger than yours but it's almost the same.
Mid/woofers :
- Peerless CSX176 (my top pick atm)
- Peerless HDS182 (almost the same as the CSX but with a cast frame instead of a stamped)
- Vifa P17WJ (seems like a nice "easy" midwoofer but the midbass is not that great apparently)
Tweeters :
- Seas 27 TFFC (again my top pick atm)
- Peerless WA10 (quite good for the price but most people say the Seas is better)
For instance : combine the Peerless CSX176 and Seas 27 TFFC and put them in a TL enclosure, develop a nice "series" filter and maken them sing together.
I'm still waiting for BrianGT to finish his Peerless Pipes and to hear his comments about them.

This is really a shame!
Audax is french, but not only you can't order speakers on the french website (like you can on the german one), but the link they give as official distributor, has some of the most expensive prices in europe (I mean for audax speakers)

http:// www. euphase.com/T-9950.htm for the 28mm silk dome tweeter oreuphase.com/8945-P.htm for tye 177mm paper carbon fiber bass-mid; these are cloned of the scanspeak drivers, good performance at a reasonable price, also check out the madisound forum for what they say about these drivers

cheers,TJB😉

this Audax unit http://www.audax.com/products/details/TM025f9.shtml comes in well under budget for you. they're £11 or £12 from maplin in the UK. I think their OK as they are strikingly similar in looks and description to those used in ATC SCM10's http://www.atc.gb.net/intro.htm# which are about 1000ukp!

Is an audax AP170ZO a good choice?
170mm, HDA
it's cheap one (44€) from the classical line
the HDA from pro line is 90€ :/

the o/p of the AP170Z0 looks a bit ragged and high above 1000Hz, have a look at the response and waterfall for yourself at the link below.

yup!, those puppies sure look like the ones used by ATC; I had A Pair till a short while ago, they were ok but nothing special to rave about, the real advantage of these little tweeters is the price, very cheap compared to std ones, there is also a titanium dome version, which is much flatter in response, without the customary peak at the top end, there also is a pair of soft domes without the face-plate, I just sold a pair of those on ebay, these are ideal for custom mounting on the baffle with just a hole about the size of the dome, radioused out smoothly to offer a modicum of horn loading and bring up the saggy response in the middle🙂
cheers, TJB
BTW, THAT IS NO G/TEE THAT YOUR SYSTEM IS GONNA SOUND AS GOOD AS THE ATC, BY any stretch of the imagination
cheers, TJB

I'd like to go with Audax drivers; since I've had much posotive feedback about Audax
except if there is something really better for the price

🙂 I see you are a cheapskate like me so you should also check out the current range of peerless drivers, their sandwivch coned bass-mids do sound nice I built a pair of 2.5 ways using the 4x5" units and their new shalow horn profile tweeters😉 not bad and reasonably priced too
cheers and good luck;TJB

TJB,
is the peerless tweeter you are on about the 811815? if so, that is the unit which made me realise i did not like the sound of "cheap" tweeters. i immediately forked out on some ss 2905/9300's after hearing it, so PERSONALLY would not recomend that model. although i'm NOT saying it's not good value at that price point!

you mean the HDS and CSX series?
BRICOLO, Tthe HDS< seRiES of course; our other correspondent is right about the tweeters, I mixed up the speakers with another pair I USEd them with in the peerless system I used a pair of VIFA D25 AG aluminium dome tweets, matched the bass drivers nicely as far as which drivers are better, peerless or audax goes, you will have to determine yourself the audax units are much more expensive than the peerless, I would venture to say for the money the peerlessHDs drivers are hard to beat, I am About to oeder a pair of the HDS 10" bass drivers for the HI-fI news & record REview TL design as featured in the july '91 issue...
instead of the Volt unit which is almost unavailable down here, the specs for the 10" peerless make them seem ideal for TL loading😉 cheers,
TJB
