Hello,
i wanna finally dive into subwoofers and wanna build my first pair
i probably will still be using studio monitors for a while as main speakers, studio subwoofer and some diy subwoofer pair quite nice with studio monitors because they include a crossover to implement the subwoofer
i was looking at the Crown XTI series, probably my best bet if i wanna have an external amp where i can easly implement subwoofers in my setup
but i was wondering... are there any alternatives? specially class AB would intrique me, i basicly need an amp with an lowpass... and preferably XLR passtrough
Thanks in advance

Class AB is only about half as efficient as class D, so twice the heat and fan noise (and weight) and double the draw from the mains power.are there any alternatives? specially class AB would intrique me, i basicly need an amp with an lowpass... and preferably XLR passtrough
The Behringer NX 1000D (2 x 500 Watts @2 Ohms; 2 x 300 Watts @4 Ohms; 1000 Watts into 4 Ohms bridge mode)
3000D (2 x 1500 Watts @ 2 Ohms; 2 x 900 Watts @ 4 Ohms; 3000 Watts into 4 Ohms bridge mode) 6000D (2 x 3000 Watts @ 4 Ohms; 2 x 1600 Watts @ 8 Ohms) all have built in DSP:
You could use female to dual XLR male XLR "Y" cords for pass through.
i mean i found something like the Avantone CLA-200 .... but i would need an additional active crossover, which i kinda wanna avoid unless its analog
dps inside the amp has the benefit of the DPS chain only applied to this specific channel, so its probably the way to go
i also found the Crown XLS series which is well regarded (but class D)
in regards to these dsp amps im most curious about new implementations of like new hypex/purifier modules if these even exist

What Art said ,
Class D is the word , forget about old tech,
Led lights are the norm now for homes ,energy efficient and longer life than incandescent bulbs.
Plus the integrated DSP is a no brainier.
Dont reinvent the wheel

well the crown XLS doesnt measure "that well" are there new pro audio designs in the hypex nilai direction with dsp? What Art said ,

but im probably landing on the same conclusion here... go with active crossover and use whatever amp, but i heared what different dacs and opamps can sound like... i kinda wanna avoid your usual active (digital) crossovers including dacs/adcs
I'd use any stereo amp of your choice together with a very basic line-level low-pass filter. For me, the key to a good system is to limit the points of adjustment.
Pick a filter frequency, e.g. 60Hz. Set the volume control on your sub amp . . . and leave it alone. All eq can be adjusted from the console.
Personally I like to set filter frequency close to the bottom of the full-range monitor response. This ensures the full-range capability of the system with subs switched off.

Most people on blind listening tests can't tell they are listening to an XLS amp or to a lab gruppen amp or to a power soft amp, unless they have a gifted ear and and their line if work is mastering records.
If you are the HIFI audiophile class type of person ,I can recommend you some pass labs amps or McIntosh amps that on audio lab tests pass the 0.0000000000001 THD tests.
But that will come to a big hefty cost of money, and even if you have state of the art audiophile class power amp and a weak link in your speaker system ,you will not able to get the most quality of your power amp.
All the signal chain must match.
In specs and quality.
But we can open a can of worms here and can talk about the most expensive preamps , mastering grade quality AD/DA converters and 80k pair of speakers used in top mastering studios around the world and top of the line power amplifiers.
But at the end all converge to the point of what can you aquire in relation to your budget.
So realistically how much from you hard earned cash will you burn for this project.
That way I and other members can chime in and recommend a Nissan versa instead of a masserati , Jaguar or rolls Royce vehicle.
If you don't mind what studio monitors you have.

i have currently Presonus Eris E8, on a desk setup, 38Hz at 0db ) tho in the near feature i wanna exchange them, currently high on the list: hedd audio type 07 mk2 + the aformentioned two subwoofers, i aim for around 500 per subwoofer and around 500 (also used gear is ok) for a good starter amp, tho crown XLS with this budget is probably one of the best bets
Yea, i was looking for a 50-70hz corner frequencyPick a filter frequency, e.g. 60Hz. Set the volume control on your sub amp . . . and leave it alone. All eq can be adjusted from the console.

if i wanna go with an active crossover i would prefer analog crossover ONLY doing crossover..... i have a digital setup including FIR -and- IIR filters (house curve + room correction up to 600Hz) i have tweaked very much with it and (completely staying digitally) into the dac of my choice is my preferred way for such a setup THO... so i only need a very basic lowpass filter (tho it needs to be combatible with the highpass the monitors are offering..)
getting a multichannel dac would be another option, so i can use my digital chain completely, but also there, way less audiophile options imo, or you go with a few thousand euro really good pro audio interface, another con for me is: you can easly blow one of your speakers if they get a full range signal because the PC misbehaves... so also DSP on PC -> multichannel dac -> multiple amps comes with its culprits....
regarding this multichannel dac setup i have two questions:
full range signal on subwoofers are "safe" right? the only really dangerous thing is to apply near DC to tweeters i guess...
studio monitors also can handle a full range signal
so in theory i could go with a multichannel dac and even if my dsp setup misbehaves nothing gets blown..
- i have currently a BLA 2x2 Revolution interface, could i hook up a second dac to the spdif out of my interface to get two other channels? in theory this should work im just not sure if these two dac would run on the same sample which is pretty crucial
