2SJ109 is pair of 2SJ74 in one case
2SK389 is pair of 2SK170 in one case
BL is for all mentioned above range of 6-12mA of Idss
in some cases, depending of actual construction, you can use BL in place of GR and other way around ....
so, for proper answer, give more details - where and for what?

In the context of a hypothetical J2 clone build, yes you could use 1 2SK389 in place of 2x 2SK170 but in the context of this thread (long skinny boards by Jeff) ... I was going to say no, not without mangling the legs radically, but after a bit of digging, you might be able to get away with it.
Use the orientation of Q1 in the diagram below for your K389, pins 1 and 7 (2 outside - top and bottom legs) bend behind to the 2 right holes and the other 4 pins are all tied together conveniently so you don't connect the middle pin (NC). If you can follow this by looking at the schematic Jeff posted in the first post (#1) as well as the datasheet for K389 and willing to take all the risks, then nobody can stop you.
Proceed entirely at your own risk

Thank you very much for such a detailed explanation. I don't know yet if I will build this version of the J2 clone due to the specificity of the chassis needed. I am slowly completing the key parts and after finishing the open projects J2 will be next in the queue.
