I'm building a projector similar to zarks but I can't find LOA lights to buy anywhere.
Uvodee, I've seen you talking about them in past posts do you know any place I can find them?

Home Depot, except the one nearest me doesn't carry the big-output ones anymore. I don't know why.
They've also been spotted int the wild at Lowe's and Wal-Mart. Learn from my mistake: call the places first before driving around (I wasted an entire Saturday). Also, be VERY SPECIFIC when you tell them what you're looking for. Otherwise they'll try to sell you something that they _think_ is just as good, but not what you want.

Well my first post to this forum - so please bear with me!
Is LOA an acronym for something. I am trying my best to locate any reference to LOA - only thing I keep finding are in research papers and one reference to a company called Genoa for their breakthru in Linear Optical Amplifier for optical transmissions. So before I start calling around to find one nearby - I need to know what is it exactly!
Thanks for your help. This forum made me believe to be able to make DIY LCD Projector. I am going with a 14.1" KOGi monitor for LCD and a 3M 9800 OHP for time being. But ultimate goal is to build a single unit.

"Lights Of America"
The make fluorex lights that have high lumen output with relatively low wattage.
<a href="http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN_US/diy_main/pg_diy.jsp?CNTTYPE=PROD_META&CNTKEY=Products_1%2fLighting+%26+Fans_4164%2fArea-Security+Lighting_4309%2fLighting+Type+-+Fluorescent+Fixtures&BV_SessionID=@@@@0073649323.1039699581@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdcadcgmjlijjicgelceffdfgidgkj.0&MID=10">Here at Home Depot</a>
There is some disagreement amongst board members as to whether or not they are suitable to power a DIY LCP projector, due to either the color of the light or the nature of the fluorex design.

yeah. Me and Zark( i copied from him) made projectors - i made 3 of them all the same concept.
they work prefectly but i have to admit pitchdark room!!! or no pic.
Homedepot, some Wallmarts
and it depends in which state you live. they are so cheap in consumption and so energy saving that some states apparently don't like them! here in Washington state Home depot has them in a few places but does not advertise them ever!

How's the quality of a pic in a pitch black room....can't really tell from zarks pics.
Should I use one or two of them because I just called Home Depot and they have 8 in stock.

Hi uvodee,
Since I am in the same state, I hope you may tell where are you in WA? I live in Redmond. I was just hoping maybe to see your setup in real if that is not too much trouble! Thanks much.
PS. To avoid posts that may not contribute to this thread you may email me at nirdesh@yahoo.com if you wish.

If I did manage to find an LOA Worklight, how do they power up? Do they require a ballast like the MH bulbs? Are they just plugged into outlets?
loa ballas
well usually they come with some sort of ballast
it is not a ballast similar to other fluorescent tubes, it is much lighter. the ones form home depot come with a photovoltaic resistor , which you can REPLACE or cover up.
the base is mogul size, a size somewhat larger than a regualr bulbsocket

I am buying a Kogi
Hey Insearch,
Did you try ripping apart the KOGI lcd. I have ordered one and expecting within this weekend. Did you face any difficulty in soldering (if at all requred) the brown cable?

Nope. Look at the bad luck - the monitor arrived and I was so excited... Tried to test it on my desktop - all I could see was color vertical lines. Changed the refresh cycle, resolution and the monitor cable to no avail. So tried it on my wife's computer - same story and my laptop would not drive it either - took it back to bestbuy store and they tried. Finally they told me to ship it back and I told to just shut up and give me my money back. They did offer to send another one but I thought since their QA is so bad, it may not be wise to rip it and try the DIY thing as it may not take the brunt! Hope yours work. Keep me posted!
I got this response about the Lights of America Fluorex worklights from Alan Staples -- some of you may know him from DIYLabs.org:
"I've tried the VHO lamps and they are a bust. Basically they work like a backlight behind the LCD panel. For 4-5" panels, this is okay because the large projection lens will collect most of that light, but once you go to a larger LCD panel, you must use a point-source for lighting. This is mostly because of the way the fresnel lens works."

all i need is about 6000lm - 10000lm for my unit im building, im using a halogena 150w that produces 2360lm and its not bright enough but u can see it in the day just lol with that ratio in mind if i triple it it would be more than enough for the night time veiwing when i watch the movies the most, however 10000lm would give me a good pic for the daytime too, the 150w halogen is just a test light to set things up while i am building it, now all i got to do is to get another light preferavbly not a mh cos they run farly hot so anyone know of any florex that puts out between 6000 - 10000lm?

The LOA Fluorex supposedly puts out 500 watt light from a 65 watt high-output fluorescent. Other specs are 6825 lumens and 10,000 hours lifespan. The outdoor, flood and worklight fixtures (with reflector) run $25-$35 and replacement bulbs are $12-15.

Replacement Bulb

But like I posted earlier -- the light these throw function more like a really bright backlight than a projector's direct beam source light. May be perfectly fine for 4"-5" panels, but not much use for anything larger.

karrok
heya there karrok thanks for the info, i get what your saying about poiunt light sources and loa's, im using a 6inch lcd so it would work but u need a light like a penitrating sorce o thonk, like the mh, with floro lights they are a scattered light and with mh they are a more dirrect light with straiter beams, some may think that all u need is a brighter back light and i thought the same until i worked out how light works and different types, the fluro light will get washed out but room light than say a mh at the lm rating because the fluro is a scatted light and not a dirrect beam source therfore u get washy pic and reasly becomes inoficient, but if it would work in mine i would use one just that it might be only good for night time veiwing, its hard to put into words while im eating lol so i hope u get what i mean anyway thanks for the specs there karrok and good luck diy.

Thanks Ace! Sometimes finding out things for yourself is the most interesting part -- hopefully it didn't cost you too much to experiment with the Fluorex bulbs though. Good luck with you DIY too.
Psionic -- I've read in this forum (search on Kogi) that there are at least two versions of the 14" Kogi panel -- older ones have a 50ms response time and newer ones have 25ms. Can anyone else verify this? Kogi's website has less specs than the resellers do (http://www.4kogi.com)
