LM337: a new epidemic?

If you buy a part with engraved type marking, there is high chance it is fake. Automated engraving is dirt cheap. It uses a hard metal needle, kind of CNC, no laser is needed. Proper silkscreening is more difficult to counterfeit.
 
But here we're not talking about that 500ma version. LM337 can deliver in excess of 1.5A (2.2A typical) & feature internal current limiting, thermal shutdown and safe-area compensation, making it virtually blowout-proof against overloads! Selling something which resembles a 337 but nowhere near the original spec is definitely part of counterfeit business.
Fakers will often buy a lower power version of the die, repackage, and call it the big one. 78L05 dies stuck in TO-220 packages. It’s been done. Try to pull an amp and a half and it leaves you a little short. At light load no one would be the wiser. TDA2020’s rebadged as 2050’s. Run them at +/-12 and they run fine. Blow up on +/-30. Same thing could easily happen with 337’s.
 
The prob with LCSC is... I don't know them! Are they good?

Btw, I received a full refund from the German eBay deal, so my net loss is only 3 bucks, and my net gain is it forced to look into the guts of the 337. Until now, I didn't even care to calculate anything, just stick a 120R and a 5K pot and call it a day.

I'm slow, I still don't get the economics for a 20ct part.
Factory seconds/rejects would make more sense. I remember the $5 fully built XR2206 function generator a while ago: it was rated for 9-12V supply, and would act up at 12.5V. For me, that's within specs even though the original IC is good to 26V. I still have one and it still works.
 
China is big land , many workers , some maybe too idle, have nothing to do... Can just guess, if it's really possible to purchase a naked crystal ( a silicone die) for some ic and have some small factory, to make plactic package, legs , and even do marking, and in fact produce fake ic this way... Its much much easier to erase markings from something, thats costs few cents, and remark them. Recently purchased opa333 so-8 20pcs , and not a surprise, they came as fakes, remarked and not rail to rail capable, maybe 741 or something similar, because pinout matches and were able to repeat input voltage in some narrow range at 3V single rail supply. Dispute was won fully, they even requested video proof , that it don't work, regardless photo was more than enough, to prove they are not original. Probably policy changed recently, so be prepared for even more fakes and fight for your lost money return.

At least there should be some compensation: charge more the big ones and let pay less the small ones.

The same with the taxes: most big companies do not pay any at all or only little taxes.

The small ones pay too much and run the state which is robbing and cheating them more or less.

Digikey will be very happy to sell you 10k of any part they have, and at a much lower price than for one piece.

It's called the economies of scale. Here's a pretty good analysis of the whole business. And I'm OK with that.

It's pretty much the same, with more fuzz added.
Here in Switzerland, we have a famous watch maker who's one of the biggest taxpayers. We also have a big food maker who's one of the smallest taxpayers; in exchange, it creates a large number of taxable jobs and contribute to the wealth of the country. Not taking side here, just pure econometry.
 
Some Chinese stuff is good and others are bad.
I bought some irfp240's from China.
Appeared to work fine to start with.
Unplugged my soldering iron and glitch on mains blew the irfp240's.
Bought some from RS Components and they are still working 2 years on.

I needed some ad9220 a2d's.
Looked on usual reputable dealers sites and they were about £20 each.
Looked on Ali Express and they were £1.50 each !
SO bought a few and they worked fine.
