Lateral Audio mosfets are dead now Renesas and Semelab both discontinue any alternate

I can't see any major manufacturer being keen to keep production of lateral mosfets. Their only use is in audio, and this is rather a niche area where BJTs are more than adequate, and class AB is dying in favour of class D anyway. From a business point of view, more/better vertical mosfets is where it's at.

The Profusion Exicon parts are still showing as active on their website. Using 12 of them here, even sold off the spare ones, so hope they are indeed still available for many years in case I do something stupid with my 6-channel amp!

Aren't they more or less drop-in replacement for the Renesas parts anyhow? Maybe some tweaking of gate capacitance is needed but I think we can largely get by with only the Profusion parts.

I believe so

Vertical mosfets found their good use in Class D, they are also cheaper more robust and capable of producing more power.🙂

I disagree. When I was doing RFIC design I worked closely with a foundry doing a silicon on sapphire process, which was unusual enough that the major foundries couldn't be bothered, but kept several smaller foundries quite busy.

Small foundries really like these niche products, but only when there isn't a lot of competition. Lateral power MOSFETs are a very straightforward well understood process, with easy lithography, relaxed geometry for high yield and no exotic materials. Add in being able to demand premium prices for product because of lack of competition and it's a no-brainer financially.

Having Renesas drop the line just means that Exicon's process is that much more guaranteed.

i've followed the BJT availability, and Onsemi nice has audio THD rated lineup in 2017 master brochure. I use higher voltage bjt in hybrids.

+1

I believe hoping for anything different would be akin to putting your head in the sand 😉

Not dead, just smells funny

If anyone still cares about this thread, I had a phone conversation with Profusion here in the UK about their Exicon line of Lateral Mosfets and they are very much committed to this line of products.

There are numerous rumours that Renesas will drop laterals; this may happen, but if you want a supplier who is committed to manufacturing laterals, then contact Profusion in the UK: Profusion Audio Semiconductors - Buy Online
