Hello Everyone 🙂
I recently got a Lafayette 710A two track, monaural reel to reel tape machine. The tone knob is badly damaged, and the tape head needs to be realigned. The tone knob looks has two pins, and I was wondering if I could replace it with a standard three-pin potentiometer. Is this possible? And how can I realign the tape head? I can hear sounds bleeding over from other tracks.

I can't see the tone knob in the pictures.
The tapeheads probably don't need realignement. Look at the red seel. It is intact. Don't turn the screws if you haven't got alignment tapes.
I think you played the wrong kind of tape (4 track?). Find a two track tape and see if that plays without the bleeding.

Thank you! I will try that. Also, the tone potentiometer is in the third and fourth pictures. It is the one at the tope in the third picture.
To be honest, I can see nothing wrong with the tone knob, mechanicaly that is. I think it is a knob with a build in switch that can be pulled in and out?
Is that correct? Or is it the on-off switch?
Here is some more info on tape tracks.
The one you have is the half track mono: https://blogs.iu.edu/mdpi/2017/09/2...es-in-sorting-open-reel-audio-tapes-part-one/
So you need that kind of tape to check.

The potentiometer itself is damaged. I can feel the wiper catching on something inside, so it sometimes gets stuck.
