Well howzabout giving us a little idea of your budget? How big a room you want to fill with noise?
Dave is a big fan of back2back mounting and Push-push woofers and it makes a lot of sense.
Big room big woofers, small room smaller woofers and medium room ditto, so can you afford 2 pair of 8inch 8R woofers?
Then you have to decide how you are going to drive them.
I am a fan of Bi-Amping so naturally that is what I recommend.
Personally I like my subwoofers to be 12inch or bigger but i guess that box size isn't suitable which is why I would go with 8's.
4 * 8inch woofers can move a reasonable amount of air

rabbitz,
What do you mean by a "painted baffle which was glued on"?
An iron on veneer that was pre-painted, in some choice of colours?
If so, where can you get them, Bunnings?
Painted MDF finished to size baffle as nipper575 mentioned in post #453. See the pic in this post.

Looking good nipper575 and more important you are happy with the sound.

How silly of me.
My budget is limited (full time student...), if I could build something for the same price as my bookshelf speakers, I would be happy. To date, I've spent roughly $250 on the pair. I can be a bit flexible though. I'm going to go ahead and assume that I am asking for the impossible...
My room would be roughly 4x4 metres in area. I would consider that small.
Bi-amping sounds nice, but it sounds like something that will be out of my reach for the time being. I was hoping to power them with plate amps unless there is an even cheaper DIY alternative (asking the impossible again???)
I'm not against a single sub, I didn't even know people ran stereo subs until it was suggested a few posts up.
I was also thinking that my TV cabinet has two openings at both ends that I currently use to store DVDs. If I can build enclosures to fill those voids, I'd find somewhere else to store the DVDs. The openings are roughly 200mm x 730mm x 540 mm. That's around 80 litres of volume excluding the wood thickness & bracing. Only problem is that it would be too narrow to mount an 8" woofer in the front.

Bi-amping can work out CHEAPER sometimes but it depends on what you have already. Without going back through all the posts what is your current amp set-up??
I use cheap Behringer gear, and second hand amps can be as cheap as $50-, doesn't have to be a dedicated power amp you know

I use an Audiosector gainclone with a 25V 300VA transformer. I'm under the impression that it wouldn't have enough guts to drive a sub woofer.

Close to 50w. A good start, just make sure you get 8 ohm woofers.
dave
I think Dave's right, add an extra 40 or 50 watts to the bass ( you are already happy? Yes? ) You will be adding some extra Oomph at around the existing boxes roll-off point.
If you can handle building a gainclone you could probably build a decent electronic XO cheap enough to come within that budget ( using cheaper drivers )

My gainclone is connected to my PC's motherboard's integrated sound card for the time being. My gainclone has a stereo pot to control volume acting as a simple passive preamp.
Sorry but I'm a little confused. My gainclone is already powering my existing speakers, are you telling me that this same amplifier will handle a sub. I'm guessing an electronic crossover is an active crossover that will allow me to control the frequency of the subwoofer cross over point.
Yes, I am very happy with the bass of my current speakers. I'd wouldn't say no to some extra oomph though.
I'm sure that I must be driving you guys nuts with the amount of questions that I ask, not to mention your answers that sail over my head. I appreciate your help and patience with me.

No, We are saying that 50 watts will be enough, you would need 2 of those; or ANY amplifier that has an equal amount of power.
So for an example, if I had a single box housing two 8" woofers, I would need a 2 channel amp with 50W per channel to bi-amp it. If I had another box identical to the first, I would need another 2x50W amp to power that also? Maybe a LM4780 based amp is on the cards...
Can people recommend some reasonably priced drivers just so I can get an idea of cost. Could I also get a rough estimate of what volume box(es) I should be thinking of building taking into consideration that I do not have a huge room. Ported/sealed etc.
Thanks

You could do it that way but it is more usual to wire 2 * 8R woofers in parallel, so one stereo amp is all you need to power 2 boxes
Hi nipper,
I use Peerless 8" 830869 (830869 HDS Nomex 8″ Woofer Peerless Datasheet) from Speakerbits in 3 way actives. They were used in an active two way originally crossed at 2.5kHz with 24dB LR and they did a good job in that format. About $110 each.

That is one way of getting double the power, and get more power out of a chip amp(s).
Note that if you parallel 2 drivers to get 4 ohms you need to reduce the rails and you end up with ~25W 8 ohm/50w into 4, so with chip amps, 4x50 into 8 makes sense.

On more of a budget than the Peerless Frank mentions, and still really good are the Silver Flute W20. This is the woofer Ed Schilling uses in his Cube.
You should be able to source them closer to home than Madisound.

A little expensive given Nippers total budget of $250- tho, for this application 4 cheaper woofers may be better I haven't used the current Jaycar paper 8inch but mates have; box is bigger than you want tho
8" Paper Cone Woofer - Jaycar Electronics
Fs is low enough to handle some EQ
The Visaton in a sealed box with a little more EQ may work
W 200 S - 8 Ohm - Soundlabs Group
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm struggling to keep my excitement down now.
Francec, they look very nice, unfortunately I am on a tight budget.
Moondog, paralleling sounds good as it will be cheaper for me.
planet10, thanks for pointing that out. If I go down the single amp route, I will use something like a 18V toroid. I'm guessing 300VA - 400VA would be suitable.
I like the look of the Jaycar woofer due to the price (surprised...). If I have to build largish cabinets, I'm sure it won't bother me too much. I may even rearrange some furniture to make them fit, having 3 desks in my room isn't a necessity. I could place the subs on either end of my TV cabinet (rather than on top). That should open up my box size possibilities.
What F3 value should I be optimality be looking for if I were to use the Jaycar Woofer? Throw some box dimensions at me, I could probably handle a couple of 80 litre boxes if I have to. I just have no idea what volume would be suitable for a twin 2 x 8" setup.
Edit: completely missed the Silver Flute woofer, that is also another possibility, shipping may kill the value though.

Just to give a better visual on the wall space I have to work with (excuse the mess), I can remove a desk giving me extra on either side of the TV cabinet.
What mess???
You should see my desk and my work bench is even worse at the moment.
The Jaycar drivers do tend to be a little inconsistent is the only problem but that is a good price and available in Tassie I think.
Using two boxes gives you lots of options, even putting them together under a desk or cabinet or in corners, a lot will depend on how low they are cut in and the XO slopes.
If you do go ahead you may find that closed boxes, which have a natural 2nd order roll-off integrate better, are a better option.
in that case you just block your ports with a sock or two or a foam plug

Made in China, surely there is a vendor that will save having them shipped back across the Pacific.
