KEF 104/2 cap replacement

Considering that area of my old board that corroded, and it’s right next to components feeding the mid/tweeters, I bit the bullet when I found someone on EBay parting out two KEF 104-2 speakers. I bought both crossover boards for one speaker for $75. They are marked as used and the seller assured me they were working. eBay will refund the money if they don’t ‘work’. Then if I want to repopulate the caps, I know I’m starting with a working board. Fingers crossed.

The recaping is really mandatory anyway due to the age of the Kef.
With the one I recaped all the values drifted to around 15 to 20 %... It was a high end loudspeaker after recaping and cleaning the T33 with fresh low grade ferrofluid. You eventually can get rid of the protection circuit if you do not plan parties. Keep the former pcb to make subjective listening tests. Try to avoid Bennic lythic caps if you do not make your market at Falcon. Mundorf, JB, Jantzen, Nichicon bipolars for loudspeakers, FT caps... are reliable. Smooth foil ones are for LL Alcaps (Low Loss). Edit you do not needs the Alcap to find again the Kef sound but it might be cheaper at the end to go for them because of the matching and the exotic capacitance values (600 uF, 240 uF, 450 uf, 30 uF, 50 uF....)

I ordered the three small caps in the area of the protection circuit, fixed the corroded traces, replaced the three caps and BINGO! I was very discouraged about replacing all of the electrolytic caps since it would have been two caps for every one. Then I couldn’t find the proper voltages, etc etc etc. I’m happy !!!
