Have you ever noticed that improving the power supply (s) of a DCX2496, for example, and modifying its stages of analog outputs considerably improves its sound quality? And that the changes in sound quality are incomparable to that visible ... to the measurements?
Once again, it would be very pretentious to pretend that we can measure everything and evaluate everything. Thanks God, there is still a bit of art and mystery in the world of audio.

The big studios closed down. Recording mostly moved to many smaller project studios. The better of the old recording guys mostly stopped getting calls. Most artists have little to no money and the project studio owners work for cheap. Only Al Schmitt still gets a lot of calls, so the other guys say.
Last time I've checked Steve Albini is alive, kicking, very happy, and doesn't miss the big studios a iota. Neither do his customers, required only to pay for the tapes and his time.

As a painter can work his technique and his drawing, there will always be the character of the colors he uses. A subtle combination of colors, material, and the way they react to his hand and will. Everything has an own character.

I don't believe it sounds comparable to DAC-3 or to AK4499. It can't, there is no way in hell it could. You can make arrangements to listen to the various dacs we talk about or not. I can't help you with that unless you want to come here. If you want to do that you are certainly welcome.

Steve is special in my book, huge highly successful repertoire but charges a fixed hourly (last I looked low). His interview with Bourdain on the food channel was a hoot, they flashed the cover of Songs About F******. on the screen. I used to play this at my work bench in the lab, though Kerosene is my favorite BB cut. The ultimate statement on life in the Midwest.

Its not extraordinary at all if you listen to some really good dacs. If you only listen to cheap dacs, then you can't know what you haven't heard.

Nope I listen to music. A DAC that costs more than I paid for my car is not on my priority list, esp as I need 3 of them.

It never ensure any audible improvement at those points. often useless in my book. So what is the need ?
Try to be honest with yourself, if you can. Look at all the possible measurements of a speaker set. Does that give you a clue how it will sound?

You've surveyed most audiophiles in general?The biggest problem that most audiophiles in general have when it comes to judging equipment is that they don't check: If a change to their system makes a noticeable difference in sound they assume it must be better, rather than A/B checking back and forth a few times over a few days. IMHO They could use some training to correct for that failing.

No need to spend time and money traveling to hear DAC differences. Just set up a casual subjective auditioning session and be woken up.You ever get out to Northern California? You want to really wake up? Set up a bias controlled objective DACs listening test for yourself listen as long as you want at your convenience, no stress, no pressure to be used as excuse for not being able to hear a difference. Try it.

I'd forgotten about that. I really need to get some time to experiment with stuff this year. That needs replicating and I do have destructable copies of the same record to play with..
In my case I had the same low noise in all three cases, no change whatsoever between the three recordings.
So maybe skating makes the whole equition even more complicated.
