Interesting to repeat my observations given the interaction over just the last 3 pages. Digital has a bunch of folks complain because there’s a distortion hump at -110 dB or something like that, or that cymbals don’t sound right because Scott has demonstrated Gibbs effects on 24/96 recordings at some low (audible?) level. On the vinyl side, they wear out or have distortion problems. Other than going to live concerts, will there ever be a medium that ticks all the boxes?

I know plenty of people that don't like concerts because they're too loud/social reasons, so you'll never win.

ScottJoplin -- you, among many, like to quote "psychoacoustics" as a reason for any number of things about our perception without a lick of evidence or citation to evidence. How about you back up your assertions? Just because no one bothers to challenge these claims openly doesn't mean that the sword cuts only one way.

As was humorously, but bitingly, said,

"In God we trust, all others must bring data" -- arguably attributed to a few notable statisticians/scientists

Was I advised to adjust my criteria downwards? I don't understand 😉
The less understood the better. As the business modus operadi goes, less the consumers know, easier it is to manipulate them. :$::$::$:

How long can something stay orbiting in the events horizon of a black hole ?
Stay polite and stop barking. :shhh:

The black hole of Mark's evidence?
Lucky that you brought his name instead of Richard's because the (cyber) bodyguard would have jumped on you. :Ouch:

Do I, such as? Only joking 🙂 I'm sure I've quoted Linkwitz and Toole a few times. Next time I quote psychoacoustics (BTW what's the meaning of the scare quotes?) I'll try and find relevant info to post here.

I still have a very old, tiny bottle of "Stylast" stylus treatment. It's supposed to lubricate the stylus tip for lower friction. I clean the stylus quite regularly so I don't worry about gunk building up. I have no idea whether it does anything useful, but it's one more little step in the "ritual" when I play a disk. It doesn't seem to hurt, anyway.

I had that too, it left little crystals on my stylus that required a solvent to remove. I used a lab microscope BTW a SEM is not necessary for much of this.

From my late father in law I inherited quite a number of LP’s that had always been played wet with Lencoclean.
These were unplayable without thoroughly cleaning them in advance, and even then, they made my stylus dirty as hell thereby causing noticeable distortion because the dirty needle seemed to loose its contact with the track.
With my own LP’s, never played with any snake oil or fluid, I never ever have to clean the needle.
So my advice would be to be very careful with using whatever sort of fluid, once used, it will be hard to stop using it because of all the dirt cumulating in the groove.

As I said, my experience too.

If the wood glue doesn't do it, then they go into the anti-zombie weapon bin.

A friend of mine (with more money than is really good for his self control) has just splurged on a pair of Pass X260.8 to drive his apogee duetta signatures. I will be intrigued to see if the Pass special seasoning works for him. He'll certainly have enough power!
