Why? Mixes don't occur in isolation. Why? Mixes don't occur in isolation. It may be easiest to get a good result when the song is good, the arrangement is good, the orchestration is good, the performers are good, the recording equipment is good, etc. Then one only has to document the performance, not work so hard to ameliorate problems.
Exactly. Good musicians with nice sounding instruments do not require as much 'torture' than the contrary. And we take as much as possible care to do not make too much mistakes, listening with various speakers, including the mastering room, to ensure we stay in some limits.

About the request of your interlocutor, he can find my mixes in the Tintin albums, I produced most of the Albums of Bianca Castafiore ;-)

One virtue about producing a cartoon character is that she is less likely to be difficult about the mix. Many mixes today are assembled almost note by note to accommodate the performer's insecurities about his/her playing. And where does that leave us in the pursuit of the "original sound"?

More we go, more "transparent" are our systems, less we need to take risks of deteriorating what you call original sound (Digital was, in a way, a good advance). I mean less torture to make them realistic (I would not say 'original', you know why* ;-)
In the same time, I wonder why modern producers in pop music try less and less to mimic any kind of virtual "reality". (RAP, DJs etc.)

*The guitarist that come with a Gibson and ask: "Can-you make me a Mark Knofler sound ?" or the drummer in his little dumped cage that they want to sound in the Hollywood Bowl.

Because the only way to reproduce at home what the creators wanted to do in the studio would be to have at home a system with exactly the same flaws as the one used during the creation process.

No, all the way to the speaker you need to be completely transparent - then apply the same room / speaker as the creator used. Which is essentially impossible, but any sound modification added before the room speaker is only a bad thing.

It is an impure thing, not necessarily bad to some consumers. Also, since there will be some imperfection in the reproduction chain, if it is unpleasant to some listeners is it okay to mask the unpleasantness with something that will make the music perceived as more enjoyable to most listeners?

I am thinking about or trying to understand where you would place something like Pass Labs HPA-1? I have listened to one, know some of the story of its design, etc. I think it would be fair to describe it as having a bit of pleasing low order distortion which didn't happen unintentionally.

You miss the point. T had implied that you needed a distorted (well amp with same flaws as he said) amp to get to the same sound as was engineered. You actually need the cleanest amp possible, then the same acoustic environment... You don't want to add the amp effects twice!
So if you want to get the studio sound, keep the amp clean as possible.
I'm not saying that's possible or desirable, just commenting on what T said...

The signal on your record never crossed this amp in the studio. (Only the ears of the producers on which they base their work). Anyway, I never talked about amp's distortion. We are in the 21st century.
Tip: Different amps DRIVE the same speaker in different ways.

@Jakob2: yes, I wouldn't disagree with anything you wrote in your last post. The point is that once you verify claims, you can reduce the unexpected character of the event (either by using subjects who claim to be able to hear it or by training subjects to hear similar events) and its one-off character (by allowing repetition of short tracks for example).

It must start with expressing a question/hypothesis as clear as possible that the sensory experiment will address.
Finding evidence for claims on a personal/individual basis is something different than finding estimates for population parameters.

There exists a lot of knowledge about good experimental design one has only to adopt (and adapt) it for audio experiments instead of ignoring it and that will most likely raise the chance for getting correct results.

I don't think this will remove all the problems of audio testing, far from it, but to come back at the origin of the discussion, this will deal with "big" differences and confine the incertitude to "small" differences.

Meaningfull sensory tests are surprisingly complex matter if it comes to multidimensional evaluation, not least as the rating of relevance or importance is broadly subjective and therefore diverging between humans.

I´ve writter numerous times that there is no need for difference tests (as it is often the least interesting question) and that often a paired comparison scheme would be more appropriate, because people are usually more interested in finding something better than just something different?

Despite that, yes if someone is interested in examing if a perceptable difference exists, it still needs well planned and executed sensory tests.
In a more formal development process where alteration/reformulation of products is part of the daily work and aimed for broader markets, the question for difference is an important one.

Btw, if you want to help, maybe you could help evenharmonics and syn08 to get rid of their winkers?
Both are now often only reacting to imaginery posted content not to anything actually written in this thread......
