Whens the last time you tried to work on a BMW, change just the front headlight bulb and get back to me! Basically all new cars are built on a computer screen and every mm of space is accounted for, no more room around any engines anymore and then they add plastic covers on the engine besides. If only the engineers who were doing the designs had to go on the floor and try and service these cars I bet then things would change. Today remove and replace has mostly surpassed any real parts repairs.
I think this is also a result of increased reliability. A single repair may be more difficult/expensive, but over the years the number of repairs required (statistically of course) goes down.
Audio is the same; tried to repair a recent streaming receiver anyone?

When you think about the fact that a vintage Can-Am race car might make 500 to 600 HP from 5 liters and what comes stock in a top model Corvette, Cadillac, Mustang or even an ill handling Charger with 700 HP, now that's nuts allowing any driver to purchase one! My Camaro probably had about 400+ horses with 4.11 rear gearing, that would do 150mph@7,500 rpm. An overdrive would have been nice. But actually on a winding road it wasn't all about power, it was how you could handle that made the difference. I'll tell you the Tesla model S is fast and handles well, I've chased a couple on the curves. The model X though might be fast in a straight line but can't get itself around a corner without throwing it around, thing handles terribly. I wonder what the model 3 will be like. Wasn't the third Ford a model "T" I get to see camouflaged new cars most days, they use Mulholland as part of the test loop. I wanted to pull up to the full camo Chrysler Jeep and tell the guy the wiring to the rear lights was completely screwed up, can they build anything right?

Depends if you are talking about a specific design or what are good specs for a new design. I assumed the latter?

Not saying they are easy to work on, but longitudinal mounted engines and RWD is a superior layout in general.

Jan it's the female receiving end for the ribbon, part of the motherboard. I suspect a bad ribbon cable but I think it is another one of them coming from the LCD screen itself. First I have to replace the connector then solve the no video on the screen. Video card is working, I can use an external usb monitor and get a signal.

I would have hope that on a diy site someone was already doing a modern minimalist phone input using 8-legs or something with few active components like Scott is showing. Am I asking for something new or unusual? Is everyone trying to better a Blowtorch or what!

If you want to spend $10-12K on a good crate engine go ahead. A slightly used motor out of a wreck is the way to go if you go that direction. I have a spare '69 Z'28 block and crank, 302, that should work real nice in that Firebird. Also already have a real strong five speed and dual disk clutch. What upsets many is when I do my magic and modify the body, been doing custom cars since my first job after high school. I figure a 325mm rear tire is close to what I had under my '69 Z'28, and 285mm up front, not going to fit in a stock body!

This is close to what I will do but many details will be different like the hood, front nose, rear spoiler and other things. But the general coke bottle shape will be close to this. I already have full steel replacement panels ready to cut up for this. My 69 Z'28 Camaro that was stolen was a similar idea but much more radical with side running boards and full tilt front end, of course that car was carbon fiber bodied! I miss that car every day when I drive on Mulholland, that car was years in the making and built specifically to run the top of the mountain, illegally low at 4" of ground clearance with custom German Bilstein shocks and custom anti-sway bars and springs and of course Recarro seats. Nothing really left stock, a race car for the street with license plates that got 17mpg
Just drop an LS engine from camaro or vette. Cam swap to 500hp, maybe improve the oil system a little. Cost isn't high, performance badass. ($500-3k depending on straight pulled to gone over) And there is endless support for conversion.
Did you have insurance on the Z28? OUCH.
I have had many project cars since 18 when I dropped in a freshened up 339 cu in sprint car engine in my fathers donated 57 chevy. After busting the rear suspension. due to axle windup....I realized that more than the engine needs to be replaced when going up in hp.
Now I start with everything being upgraded and the high HP engine goes in last. Larger heat capacity radiator, HD differential, stronger trans etc etc.... and brake upgrades..... all needed for reliability with higher HP engine install or upgrade.
If you can afford it, newer stock High power cars are once again available and all the drive line/suspension/brake have already been upgraded and all works wonderfully.... take the ZR1 or CTS-V for example... they use same engines and both handle like a dream. 600-700HP and reliable. And still get good gas mileage... in cruise mode, the CTS-V runs in 4 cylinder mode.
DIY can be a lot of fun and you can spread out the time/costs to suit your priorities. I spent 10 years on one project car and was able to get it to pass CARB smog tests before selling it. I could pull the front wheels high off the ground with that thing such was the power and traction. Calif street legal. It can be done. I kept the car looking as stock as possible to make it a 'sleeper'. But the car rocking from side to side at idle was a give-away.

Years ago I wanted a 59 BRG Jaguar with the wire wheels and a stock Chevy drivetrain like the one in my Gremlin. Who would know?

Was that a bad comment? I only have one friend who got a chance to try and said the annoyance factor made it a nonstarter. It would be great if all cars were autonomous and could form an intelligent mesh and drive at a maximum safe speed continuously updated. I'm sure the AI guys are working on that, but it remains a chicken and egg problem. We are probably talking about different issues, public acceptance for personal use vs. the delivery/livery issue.
I would buy one in a minute for my 93 yr. old mother to get her doctor's appointments and handicapped people would benefit immensely.
You have me pegged wrong, years and years ago MIT installed an early prototype version of Google (or one of the other search engines) in the engineering library instead of the endless trays of Dewey cards, within one night I said this is it. OTOH we have Segway for which I said ho hum on day one ( I never realized that it was also brutal on folks with bad knees). The Mr. Marshes of the world are not going away they will never sit passively in a vehicle solely as conveyance.
