Oops that’s right. I was thinking about the 2440 to 2441’s.No, the aluminum 2410/2420 had a spiral diamond pleat, the phenolic 2461/2470 had a half roll.

Thanks for the correction. 🙂
Barry.
Most interesting. Could anyone point me to where I can get suitable l-pads please?
In the US I would just go to Parts Express. You must have a similar source in NZ, they should be easy to find.

@weltersys some of finds. The 2231a cones are original, but the foam surrounds have been replaced, and poorly. They will have to come off and be redone.
Hello
How did you determine they are original? They are not faded at all. Unless they lived in a box or are a recent re-cone. There hasn't been that many kits and they go back to the late 70's with the 2235 as a replacement. Matter of fact the re-cone for a 2231 wound be a 2235 kit. If you can measure Fs 16Hz 2231 and 20Hz 2235. I have measured fresh re-cones of 2235 and Fs is damn close the pair I measured 19 and 20Hz.
The 2420 looks like a Ti replacement. Could be 2421 but doubtful as they are no where near as common as the Ti's.

@Robh3606 - you raise a good point. I had shown gentleman who has some expertise the photos attached - it was he who told me the numbers aligned with original JBL parts. Given his line of work and history with JBL, I trusted his comments. I'd be happy to hear other thoughts though.. I'd rather know what im dealing with. Thanks!

Just did a quick search at Lansing Heritage. Those are the correct cone numbers. In addition the 2231H/136H and 2235 use the same basic cone. I have attached pictures of both use the same mass ring the difference being the suspension. The easiest way to know is measuring Fs so you can tune your reflex cabinet using the correct T/S parameters. 2235 kit not installed

Good idea those older alnicos can be a little light on flux. Also the power handling and x max are different both improved in the 2235 kit so it is important to know or your sim's won't be good. Hope he get's it working so you can start your project! Have fun that's a great driver set.

Im hoping I can build my own regausser by connecting the microwave to the toaster, then adding dishwasher liquid and putting the whole contraption in the hot tub. Its been great knowing y'all!
LOL! The right dishwasher soap is the key and take no chances don't forget to ground yourself! The longer you hold on the better re-gaussing will go.

The voice coil typically burn or set the cone on fire before the Alnico magnet would permanently loose strength.I'd like to that, but I feel like I should have the magnets regaussed before I do...
Doesn't look like your woofers lived that kind of life.
no, but surely deplietion of flux over time is common enough with alnico - these are now 50ish years old... may have some impact?
I doubt the flux density difference in a driver sitting for 50 years would amount to any more than manufacturing differences.
If the driver had been through multiple recones due to burnt coils, and looked like a bowling ball, I'd expect some changes.
