It's interesting to look at what really goes on in a resonating air column (see attachment).

The lower section of the animation looks at the longitudinal motion of particles in a standing wave.

The length of the little horizontal line associated with each particle indicates its amplitude of motion - maximum at the antinodes and zero at the nodes.

(The upper section of the animation shows the transverse standing wave representation by way of comparison.)
