You were saying.......Agreed for the ''wideband'' part, but the idea is still by using a real subwoofer, isnt it?
Wideband With Subwoofer WWS
but i'd rather go with
Subwoofer Assisting Wideband SAW
SAW™
🙂
From my point of view, DSP is pure fun. But that's me!
I enjoyed the fun of it, measuring, programing, etc... But, i can't help wondering what's the use of killing mice with nuclear weapons...🙄
Maybe for a project belonging to the Linkwitz saga, Pluto, Orion , LX xxx etc... you have no choice, and fortunately enough DSP is more convenient than ASP...
But then again, what's wrong with an humble fullrange driver?
With or without feeback, class A or whatever, tube, mosfet, or state of the art bullchip, Zen will be Zen...

I wonder how much people here have non DIY high-end speakers 30-200KEUR?
Most high end systems I have, or I have heard/measured in private listening are FAR away from perfect text book engineering point.
Primary purpose of comercial high end audio is not recreate what was recorded, but rather create ilusion of reality. I must admit i have never heard any active (analog or digital) which turns my skin goosebumps on. very clean, very tight, its fne for electronic musics, but clasical, jazz ,vocals misses that "direct sound"Devil is in the details.

Most subwoofers do not go high enuff to adequately integrate with a FR midTweeter.

For kids like us: yessss!😛
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I'm with you with that, Dave... there is not much.
TIW 250 XS is pretty good, though. Very impressive 10in. swoofer.
Otherwise, there is few subwoofers that can be pushed north of 150hz but that requires... a DSP! 😀
... and there is the 18FH500 that opens new possibilities:
Wideband Assisted Wideband
WAW™
'' Two widebands walks into a bar...''

Ready made maybe, but not an issue with DIY and SAW speakers are never going to become mainstream.....or are they?Otherwise, there is few subwoofers that can be pushed north of 150hz but that requires... a DSP! 😀
That's one of the greatest things about DSP: you can make configs otherwise impossible (read: not optimal at all)
... a match between a 3fe22 and a 18fh500 in an... open baffle (!)
... matching real subwoofers with less-than-8in-fullrange/wideband
... having a 950PBbe crossed at 400hz... Hornless (!!)
Did i mention the pure fun thing ?

I once played with a Morel UW1058 with a Jordan JX6, and had to come to the conclusion that a subwoofer is one of the most unsophisticated sounding piece of gear on earth...😀
PD: I also blew that pair of JX6, me who had never burnt a tweeter in my life before...😱

I look at response needed as to at least 500 Hz, more is better. Some of the helper woofers we use go up to near 10kHz.

Once crossed with a steep slope (say 48db/oct+) you can pretty much push any fullrange/wideband driver that has a Fs of 120hz or less and decent xmax from about 200hz. Which makes things somewhat easy to match with most subwoofers. Needs help with EQ, of course, but very doable.
Also the steep slope on lowpass's subwoofer helps a lot. If you brickwall a subwoofer JUST before he starts to sing, you're good. 😛
just don't let the m***&/ker start to sing.

yeah but that's no subwoofer.
Pretty pointless IMO.
I'd rather keep the Fullrange-fullrange set-up, clean and pure, then...
If i'm not getting my first octave, a solid 25-40hz, then what's the point. I'll go back to Lowther or Voxativ then..
But then again, what's wrong with an humble fullrange driver?
-The small ones don't have bass.
-With the large ones you can't move your head, if you do, tonal balance changes. And on top of that, the cone breakup distortions are not my cup of tea. Apparently this goes for most people, see Olive-Toole.

In my whole life, my whole life, the worst subwoofer driver experience i had was with a so-called subwoofer from... Morel.
That company shouldnt be allowed to sell ''subwoofers''.
Few people really experienced a clean, effortless, 1st octave. Not that easy, i can tell ya.
25-35 Hz in both cases were HF extension is to 10kHz.
