is it time to give up?

I drive my Z215 via HTPC. After tweaking, the results are quite good.

Yes, the hotspot can be very irksome, and yes, I would like to use it during the day too, but overall I have had a great time with this project, and I am quite satisfied.

the only thing I long for now is a QA-2500. Then life would be great. That panel or a Panasonic AE300 projector (with someone else buying the bulbs  )

I also have a small hot spot and at times it can be right on someone's face. But, I would have to buy a very high quality LCD projector to out perform it. DLPs are still too expensive and since CRT has the best picture, I bought one on ebay. It hasn't arrived yet and I'm anxious to compare. I drive my panel with a non-progressive scan Toshiba DVD player which is connected to a TV-3000 and that improves things nicely. I can use the TV-3000 remote to make fine adjustments to the brightness, contrast, hue, etc.

You mentioned blurriness in your original post and I just don't have that problem. For each movie, I may need to tweak the focus at the beginning and I'm done.

After my own experiences with my diy projector project I have found that there has to be a trade-off between quality and expense. There is no doubt in my mind that the perfect reflectors, lcds, lightsources and optical components are out there, they are just unrealistic in price. Even so, sometimes we get lucky e.g. Marklar and his reflector, and that luck can make or break the project.

As for my current projector problems, hotspots, ghosting and overheating fresnels are causing me most difficulty. I have already warped one set of ohp fresnels beyond use 😱

Below is a picture of my latest setup output - how does it compare to others having hotspot problems? Even with all the problems I am very happy with what I've achieved and would be content to finish now, stop fiddling with the projector and start using it for its end-purpose - movies and games!! But how likely is that, really 🙂

The projection below is 3m(108") diagonal

gunawan, i havent tried it becose i dont have panel!
i am planing to use laptop LCD connected to desktop PC for it, and i think i am on the right track to solve that problem - check out LCD PANEL thread for it!
thinking of the whinners suggestion, maybe it would be the best to take regular OHP, remove its double fresnel, and to place full page magnifiers with lcd between instead of OHPs fresnels!
i think that you have to have fresnels on both sides to make light rays parallel when they pass through panel, and then to bend them to magnifing lens!
and when you use fresnels in such configuration, you cant use reflectors!
also, i think you made mistake with reflector design, when i catch some time i will draw it for you!
