Iron Pre Essentials Kits For The DIYA Store - Register Your Interest

just a note, I've seen ystrdy that (recommended by me) Slagle "200$ AVC set" is now 300$

(wrote before, don't want to clutter this thread with Iron Pumpkin - I will not sell my Iron Turtle AVC separately; as it happened, I did show enormous talent to ubercomplicate my own life with zillion of different amps ..... no need to do it with everything)

nope; explained plenty of times, but so again
short standard attenuator pads, wire (any) AVC in place/instead of (Cinemag, Edcor, Jensen) output autoformer, Voila!; best to use approved** AVC if you want to have possible gain (appropriate wiring of signal to AVC); some are having complicated switching of signal tap and output and those are difficult or impossible to wire for resulting gain

**for now, I know that Slagle 200..... ups! 300$ is adequate; other from same source having two switches are not
so - if in doubt for any , ask here or in future thread

Ok, it makes sense that AVC is the output of a preamp.
I build the Iron Pre "as is" with Cinemag. The output impedance depends on gain settings. It is not as simple as standard preamps where in many cases it is just a 50 ohm resistor.

Iron Pre SE is having settable gain +6db or +12db; that's 2V/V and 4V/V; in first case Rout is 2^2*Rout of JFet buffer, in second case it is 4^2*Rout of JFet buffer

Iron Pre Bal is having strictly just +6db of gain, which is 2V/V; Rout is 2^2*Rout of JFet buffer, per phase; or 2*(2^2*Rout of JFet buffer) sum/balanced

Rout of complementary JFet buffer is Rout of Nchannel side in parallel with Rout of Pchannel side

that being (1/xconductance + Rsource) of upper, in paralell with (1/xconductance + Rsource) of lower

Rsource roughly 1/2 of common trimpot in sources ; 10R to 20R trimpot

xconductance of tiny TO92 Toshiba critters is (taken midrangey) 15mS ......... you can see it as ~65R resistor (1/S)

so, 65R + 10R up, 65R + 10R down, means 75R up and 75R down, means 37R5

easypeasy

dunno what's standard preamp, but everyone who heard this one agree that it isn't standard

regarding preamp Rout - I don't care for it - as long it is low enough

now ....... just imagine what happens with Rout when you have AVC in place of fixed autoformer ..... set with no gain and say that you took signal to output from -6db tap?

:devilr:

2^2 = 4 and 4^2 = 16? .....is this how it is interpreted?
6 dB will be enough for me. So 2^2 x 37,5 = 150 ohm in this case for total output impedance?
The DC-loss in the transformer windings is small compared to this?
This I can look up in the data sheet for the Cinemag.
